Last night, I had the opportunity to go to the launch party of the new book, Kirtsy Takes a Bow: A Celebration of Women's Favorites Online (Bright Sky Press, 2009). The book, edited by Laura Mayes of Kirtsy.com and authored by over 100 online writers, is basically an anthology of some of the best online content to date. It's the kind of book that you'll love whether you're involved in social media, or have no idea what social media is, but you love intelligent, funny or insightful writing.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I admit that I contributed a few images and essays to the book; however, last night was the first time I actually sat down with the book in its entirety, and I was thrilled to find out that in addition to featuring writers, artists and designers with whom I was familiar, there were also many really talented writers and artists whose work was new to me. And so today, I thought I'd share with you some of the designers who were featured.
Jeweler, artist and designer Colleen Baran makes one-of-a-kind and limited edition jewelry that is truly stunning -- and it's not just me who thinks this, she's exhibited and published internationally. Luckily for us, she has a blog, SeeSeeBe.
Studio Mela, by illustrator Shelli Dorfe, is the source of beautiful limited edition art prints -- and since Shelli is a "firm believer in affordable art," this is a good thing. You can buy your own at her online shop, Happy Little Nest.
And finally, the lovely Krystyn Heide (who actually designed my website) is featured: in particular, her website HopeRevo.com -- a site that encourages its readers to leave anonymous messages of hope in their neighbourhoods, as a simple act of kindness.
Karen is a writer and photographer in Houston, Texas. You can read and see more of her work at Chookooloonks.
