My plan is to:

1. Shop only once a week
2. Take time to make a more detailed and accurate shopping list and not scribble one down on the run. I miss too many things that I really need.
3. I will only buy whats on the list (I’m sure I can do this)

My second plan is to detox and simplify one utility bill at a time:
My criteria is to see how I can simplify payments, save money and research for any cheaper, more efficient, easier and greener options out there. My first utility bill which I was pushed into simplifying is my phone.

I’ve had no phone line for the past two weeks, not even dial tone. It was during a process of being unable to contact my provider easily that I started researching options. To my greatest delight I have found that by changing to net phone or voip I am now able to use my phone over the broadband line and save myself at least $100.00 each month. I’m off to a great start and loving my detoxing and simplifying journey even more. Yeah!

We love our Vonage service. We switched about 8 months ago after some amount of frustration with our standard phone bill with AT&T. We were not able to get a local number, so we went with a number in my in-law's fair city and added and 800 number for our local friends to reach us. All this and we went from a bit over $100.00 a month for a basic phone bill to less than $40.00. We both have our cell phones (mine is my constant connection to my 6 children and my business and my hubby's is paid for by his office).

One thing to consider when ditching a land line and going with cell phone only or VoIP is whether or not you will miss 911. We are able to get VoIP emergency services where we are, but not everyone can. And to be honest, we would have gone with just our cell phones if it had not been for our commitment to keep 911 accessible in our home (like I said 6 children).

Grocery shopping is another way I have really cut back our spending. That list you have up there is a good one and I go one step further; I have a list of standard menus that make it easy for shopping. Each menu also has a grocery list of every single item I would need to make that menu for the week. Every item right down to the spices. I may not need each item every time I shop for that menu, but then all I have to do is check what I do need and I have a quick list and am ready to go. On each week's shopping list I also have added all the standard items that we keep in the pantry/fridge like milk bread and eggs, flour, etc. Certain things should just be staples and that list is different for everyone.

Also it is a good idea to have some standbys in the cabinet. We never know when something may happen that will prevent me from making what is on eth menu. One day the car broke down and that took three hours out of my afternoon and meant the meal for that night would not have been ready until close to nine o'clock. A good old standby was pulled and ready in 30 minutes tops (spaghetti and meatballs). I keep precooked meatballs in the freezer, jars of sauce and noodles in the pantry. Even if we don't have salad or bread to go with it, it is a standard and ready quickly. Even my older two can prepare this in a pinch (10 and 12 years).
