Digital Life Sacrifice: Celebs Off Themselves for a Good Cause

Kim Kardashian is dead. She's in a coffin, with a cell phone by her side.
Lady GaGa is dead.
Justin Timberlake is dead.
Alicia Keys -- kicked the bucket.
Ryan Seacrest -- worm food.
Justin Bieber -- yup, him too, and at such a young age.
Their Twitter and Facebook accounts are as silent as the grave.
Now before you go thinking there was some mass casualty at the latest awards show, or for the snarkier that your wildest fantasy has come true (no more Bieber tweets anyone?) these celebrities and more have taken a drive off the virtual cliff all in the name of raising money for charity.
The "Keep a Child Alive" campaign, the brainchild of singer Keys, encouraged some of Hollywood and the music industry's top names to log off Twitter and Facebook today and NOT return. At least not until $1 million dollars is raised.
Of course this has some hoping they don't, actually, raise the money.
Admittedly though, the idea has one hell of a point. Leigh Blake, president and co-founder of the charity, said:
We’re trying to sort of make the remark: Why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the place that we’re all from?
The campaign is part of a larger social media push for the charity, that even includes the groundbreaking scanning of barcodes found on websites and t-shirts.
It’s the one purchase nobody can live without. It’s Life. When you buy life, you give life to millions of people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India by providing the medicine, food and shelter needed to fight this awful disease.
Whenever you see a “BUY LIFE” bar code, simply scan it using Stickybits or WiMO and instantly make the purchase of a lifetime.
You can also purchase a fully scannable “BUY LIFE” t-shirt and invite others to buy life wherever you go. This shirt not only looks good, but every scan does the world good.
So I get to forgo reading celebrity tweets, Facebook status updates, BUY a cute shirt, use cool new tech, AND help a good cause? Wow, social media at it's finest right here folks.
Other celebrities taking part include Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams and Swizz Beatz. The digital deaths coincide with today, World AIDS Day.
