I am on social security disability. Because I have two underage children still at home I also receive SSI benefits for them. Strangely enough, the amount of money I receive thas been deemed by the state of Nevada to disqualify me for medicaid and food stamps. I find this ridiculous.
Without medicaid I have to make payments of nearly $600 to carry my Cobra benefits from my previous employer. They are well aware of that. Therefore, by denying me medicaid and food stamps they have effectively left me with a negative balance.
Why would any state disqualify someone on social security disability for food stamps and medicaid. It's not like social security benefits are ever exorbitant or exceed the normal cost of living. Do they really believe that $446 pays for all expenses of a child including food, medicine, the extras at school, clothes, etc? Why do they insist on creating additional hardship and punishment for people whose only crime is getting sick or injured?
This may sound like a whine but it really is a question of logic. I worked for 30+ years in a professional position and made 100K when I stopped working. I paid plenty into the system before I ever asked for anything from it. Now that I need something from it I find its harder than pulling teeth and the logic is more than lacking. There is no logic.
I want reasonable logic in the system. I want the system to serve those it is supposed to serve and stop coddling teenagers afraid to go get a job out of high school or lazy housewives or beer guzzling couch potatos. There, I said it. But I've sat in the welfare office and seen them. They aren't going through the ringer that I am. They aren't sent back for form after form after form just to get the run around. At least I made my contribution to the system. I think people should have to have contributed in to be able to take out. Just like social security or unemployment.
