This is as much of a rant as it is a post. I'm constantly on a quest to eat healthy (and local), but sometimes you just need one of those old stand-bys that remind you of your childhood. The other day, I went to my employer's cafeteria and my eyes were drawn to the Rice Krispie treats.
Oooooo, I thought to myself, I haven't had one of those in years. They aren't usually too bad on fat and calories, even though they are high on sugar. I'll go for one of those. Well, I got it back up to my office and only then did I look at the label. The third ingredient on the list? HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!
Ugh. That awful product is in everything. I know, I should have looked at the label before I bought. Even after I bought it and read the label, I should have put it out on the communal kitchen counter for someone else to eat. But no. I tried two bites of it.
Gone was the tasty, sweet, chewy snack of my youth. In place of it was a horrible, greasy, hockey puck. The rest of the treat went in the garbage.
Lesson learned. Next time I'll resist the temptation of the prepackaged treats and go for something homemade.
