I recently read A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I love supernatural romance novels and thought this would be one. It certainly was a supernatural romance but it was a highbrow version that made me feel good about myself for reading it.
A Discovery of Witches was written by a history professor. It traces the story of Diana Bishop, a witch and history professor on leave in Oxford, England. While researching for a paper, she discovers an ancient manuscript that has been bewitched. It turns out that the supernatural world has been searching for this manuscript but she was the only one able to find it. The story follows Diana as she discovers more about her magic, her history and her family. She also meets Matthew, a vampire with a mysterious past.
I am a closet Twilight fan. It's my own deep dark secret. A Discover of Witches is like Twilight but for grown ups (let's admit it, we all love Twilight but it is for teenagers and you can tell when reading it). A Discovery of Witches is the same type of enthralling tale but with a better grip on grammar.
It's a great combination, the luscious language in a supernatural romance. Harkness' grasp of language is amazing. It is beautifully written and since Harkness is a historian, I assume it is historically accurate (being historically challenged, I can’t vouch for that).
The book is suspenseful and the ending leaves you hanging. I am waiting with bated breath for the next installment. According to the author’s Web site, she is currently working on the second book and it should be released in 2012. I can’t wait.
