I am an avid fan of books about the supernatural. Bring on the vampires, zombies, witches, warlocks and I am giddy! When I heard about the book The A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, I knew I wanted to read this tale. At a whooping 580 pages, I knew this tome was lengthy (obviously) but the feedback I received from my friends that read the book was that this was a quick read.
I have to say that I was NOT disappointed. True to my friends’ observations, this almost 600 page book felt more like 200 hundred. I am already chomping at the bit for the next installment! This tale is a romantic venture into the lives of witches, vampires and daemons that live among us. Unlike the popular Harry Potter and Twilight series that are targeted at children and young adults (although I admit to reading both with a fervor), A Discovery of Witches is truly an adult tale.
There are moments when my blood was actually boiling with anticipation because of the romantic gestures that were occurring in the story. Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t depicted like a sappy Harlequin romance, the exchanges were very natural and at times quite heated. Another aspect of the story that I really enjoyed was the historical context, although none of the historical periods were delved into very deeply, it was enough to learn a little about different periods.
Some of the themes were the usual suspects that are in all vampire/witch stories but overall the book held my attention and I continued reading because I really wanted to know what was going to happen next. If you are a fan of the supernatural, A Discovery of Witches is a book you will enjoy. Like most books of this ilk, you have to suspend your beliefs of the norm to really get into the story but I think for me, this is the allure of supernatural tales. They are not for everyone but if you enjoy a little magic, vampires and otherworldly creatures, A Discovery of Witches will not disappoint!
