DISCUSS: How the Media Failed Women in 2013

The awesome Representation Project has released its year-end report on sexism in the media, called "How The Media Failed Women in 2013."
Last year's version was called "Sexism in the News Media 2012," and focused mostly on all the misogynist insanity that went on during the election season.
But this year's video is different. It starts out with an amazing list of successes that melted my heart: Malala as TIME's Person of the Year, Orange Is the New Black, Kerry Washington's Emmy nom, and the news team of Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff. Then it gets into some ads and entertainment media stories, like "Blurred Lines" and Miley twerking at the VMAs, and ends with the news.
My take: I love what The Representation Project does, and I mostly love this video. I do think that the entertainment and commercial stuff was a mixed bag: Genuine outrageousness like women bound in the trunk of a Ford, a "commemorative" severed female torso in a video game, and the Onion calling Quvenzhané Wallis a "c*nt," next to, say, a Rihanna video, seemed to dilute the message. Rihanna and Miley are powerful women I have to assume have control over their image; you may deplore Miley for appropriating black culture and perpetuating stereotypes, or think Rihanna's not a role model -- that's not the same as them being misrepresented by the media.
