diy holiday decor

Thanks in large part to my always creative mom, I was taught never to leave a Christmas package un-embellished!  To that affect, I have created some pretty (and ultra-cheap!!) stars for your gift or tree, made out of…. wait for it…. recycled toilet paper rolls!  Read on for the ingredients and technique.  Enjoy!

DIY Holiday Stars

Time:  45-60 minutes (includes drying time)

Cost:  Under id="mce_marker"0

What you’ll need:

-Empty toilet paper rolls with excess paper entirely removed

-High saturation craft paint (I used red and gold)

-Paint brush

-Painting supplies (water cup, damp cloth, paint holder, newspaper etc)

-Scissors

-Quick drying, high bond glue (I used a hot glue gun)

-Twine, raffia, or other decorative string, cut in to 5 inch long pieces

-Buttons

Steps:

1.)  Remove as much excess paper from the rolls as possible.  Apply paint to outside and inside of rolls.

2.)  Let dry (about 15 minutes).  I spent this time prepping the O.R. for another project… post to follow!

3.)  When dry, put 2 lengthwise creases into the tube that take it from a cylinder shape to an almond shape.  With your scissors, cut into 1/4-1/2 inch wide pieces (these are your petals!)

4.)  Add a drop of glue to the base of one petal and press another petal to the glue to attach.  Hold firmly with your fingers for 5 seconds and move on to the next petal.

5.)  When you have completed a flower, hot-glue a button or two to the center, attach a piece of twine and admire your handiwork!

Look for posts coming soon on how to wrap a beautiful gift!  Thanks for reading!
