DIY: Jewel Statement Necklace

Dear Fashionistas,

DIY (Do It Yourself) has been a popular trend for a few years now. As time goes on, more and more ways of creating your own personal masterpiece keep appearing. Making your clothes, jewelry or even decorations is a fab productive hobby that will leave you feeling proud and of course fashionable.

Statement necklaces are a spring/summer super staple. What better way to find just the right statement necklace than by creating it yourself. In our new Fashionista Chicago DIY segment, we will be constructing our very own jewel and chain statement necklace. You will look so chic and everyone will ask; “where did you buy it?” So let’s get started:

What you’ll need:

Chain (2 separate chains, 21 in total is more than enough)
3-6 Large beads or jewels
Jewelry Wire
Jump Rings
Toggle Clasp
Crimp Beads

DIY What you'll need

To begin, slide your jewels or beads onto a piece of wire about 7-9 inches long. Slide a clamp bead on each end and secure to guarantee the jewels won’t slip apart.
Step 1

Step 2

Take the wire and slide it through the last link of your chain. Bend the wire through the chain creating a loop and wrap the wire back around itself. If needed, remove any excess wire. Repeat for the other end of your wire. This securely attaches the chain to the jewels.

Step 3

Step 4

After your chain is connected, check the length of the necklace. If it helps, stand in front of your mirror and hold your necklace at different lengths to see what works best. I wanted a shorter necklace, so I disconnected six links on each side. Adjust the chains to your desire.

To make the closure, add a jump ring and a piece of the toggle clasp to each side of the chain.

Step 5

Simple as that! All that’s left is to flaunt your own creation!
