I am a published author. And you can be, too.

My background: I have an MFA in fiction. I published a nonfiction book with Seal Press called Navigating the Land of If in May 2009, and I have a work of fiction titled Life from Scratch being published by BelleBooks for release in December 2010. I am currently working on a new book proposal for a piece of nonfiction while simultaneously working on edits for BelleBooks (and starting the second book in that series).

That’s my experience; other people may have different experiences with publishing that they can add in the comment section below. This information comes from what I've gleaned from my MFA program, my agent, other writers, and my own experience.

First things first: Unless you are selling movie rights or have royalties coming in from dozens of books at once, it is very hard to support yourself entirely with book publishing. Most of my income comes from articles and speaking engagements. Very little of it comes from book publishing, but book publishing is unique in that it has a cumulative effect. I do the work now, but I'm paid now and well into the future. Once you have several successful books collecting royalties, it is possible to earn a decent supplemental salary writing books. But most people will need to continue teaching or freelance writing.

Here's how this series will work: Over several posts (outlined below), I will walk you through what you need to do to publish either a work of nonfiction or fiction including what to expect with each leg of the process from idea to holding your book. Others will chime in with their experience and ask questions that I'll answer in the comment section below.

These posts will never close, so even if you are reading this years into the future (hello 2012! Are we still living above-ground?), you can leave a legitimate question below, and I will answer it. Though since this information is spread out over many posts, please place your question on the appropriate post, and if that post hasn't gone up yet, trust that I will get to that topic in the future (and if I don't, ask your question then).

Before our first class, you should take a look at this list of terms that I'll be using as I walk you through the process from having an idea to holding your book in your hands. I'll be adding terms to this initial list as these posts unfold.

So let's begin by doing a roll call of everyone who wants to learn how to get published. Why? Because in the future, I'm going to suggest that you hook up with a few other writers, and in order to do that, if you don't have people in your face-to-face world, you can contact someone below who has a different type of blog from your own. So, in this roll call, please state your blog name, give the url in the appropriate url space so your name is linked to your blog, and tell us a little bit about what you write (werewolf romance novels, memoir about your year of baking 365 pies, how to book on catching squirrels as pets). Keep it as general as possible, please.

Heads Up: Topics that will be covered in future installments (and this is subject to change as questions are asked and information unfolds):

1. THIS POST

2. Getting Started: How to Decide If You’re Ready to Get Published and Make a Platform That Agents Will Take Seriously

3. How to Write a Non-Fiction Book Proposal and Choose Your Chapters

4. Why You Need an Agent

5. How to Find and Sign with a Reputable Agent

6. Querying Agents

7. What Happens Next -- Waiting for a Book Sale

8. No Agent? Other Paths to Publication

9. What to Expect After You Sign a Book Deal

10. Be Your Own Publicist

11. A Mishmash of Leftover Questions and Answers

Okay, now go call your own name in the roll call.

Melissa writes Stirrup Queens and Lost and Found. Her book is Navigating the Land of If.

Hello!  I currently write for www.joyfulchallenge.com where I share the journey of my life since losing our oldest son.  Though I share the struggles and tears, the main focus of the blog (and my life) is finding the joy in every day.  I began writing in memory of Austin at www.austinslegacy.blogspot.com.

Hi, I'm Kim Gane.  I may be a little slow in coming to the party (hence the name; it's kinda my M.O.), and in finally giving in to the stories that have been duking it out in my brain, but I'm here, nonetheless, and I'm terribly excited to get some step-by-step guidance in this area.  I have a couple fiction pieces that I've worked on over the years, and my intentions are to pick one, focus on that, finish it and prepare it for submission.  I've taken to blogging on a more regular basis this month with NaBloPoMo, trying to develop a daily (almost) writing habit.  I'm taking Creative Writing II this spring, after having a terrific experience with CWI last fall.

I started a blog back in 2006 with one measly entry:

http://glutenfreegratefully.blogspot.com

And I have a wannabe website, www.WestCoastPosse.com, where I intend to transfer all my blogging under a more general umbrella that better represents who I am today.  I'm looking for contributors!

My blog is about about questions, not about solutions–about giving voice to the experience of being alive and wondering how to live. It tends to be best liked by other "writerly" bloggers and readers. I write about parenting, about living with fibromyalgia, about my odd assortment of pets and whatever else comes to mind.

Hello Folks!

My blog is over at Walking Between the Grapevines ( http://www.walkingbetweenthegrapevines.blogspot.com ) and it's about raising my six kids as a single mom. The day to day fun and a helping of recipes and crafts thrown in.

I'm working on a book about my life. Through several failed marriages, severe abuse under the hands of my second husband and life with my third "marriage" to a womanizer looking for a business partner.

My blogs can be found at confessionsofhomeschoolingmom.blogspot.com & masquemividamisma.blogspot.com. I write about events going on in the area, different aspects of motherhood, and homeschooling.

I have been working on a romance fiction lately, something I picked up again recently after many many years- I actually started the story and planned out the story line when I was 15. I happened upon my original writing again when I was digging through some old papers just last year- which I had tucked away when life got in the way- and was so compelled by the first page I kept on reading the words I'd written so long ago as a teen and had forgotten about.

I immediately climbed into bed with the rest of it and read till I was done, then got out my notebook and began to edit and work on finishing the story. As a busy mom, I'm still hacking away at it, but one day, I'd ultimately love to get published.

Thanks for sharing this info, I really, really need it.

Hi,
I have no formal writing experience. And it probably shows! I currently have a blog called Finger Lakes Foodie that is still quite unfocused in topic matter but is centered only personal exploration of local food in the Finger Lakes and living better on less. There is a social community in development that the blog is designed to complement.

I want to write a book on the subject matter of living more on less, with the major subject focus being food, cooking and personal finances.

I've thought long and hard for many years now about writing a non-fiction book regarding events in my life and how other women/young girls might benefit from my experience. I think that I am ready to begin and I have a great appreciation for this site. My first step is to start researching the subject and see what, if anything, is out there. It's a scary undertaking, but I truely believe that it's a worthy endeavor. Thank you for the inspiration!

Just found these posts and am excited to start reading them. I've been a closet writer forever and have written technical type stuff for my job in education for 30 years. I just retired in June and had an epiphany, I could take the time to explore and enjoy my writing now.

I'm in the process of creating a blog and exploring what type of writing that I want to do. I'm having a blast, but am not sure of my direction yet. I like to read and write in just about every genre.

Hi Melissa!

I have sustained my blog for about two years and am just finishing the first draft of my first book, chronicling my job touring with the broadway tour of A Chorus Line and, upon getting home, discovering that my husband is having an affair with my sister-in-law. Because it covers a very sensitive topic and I want to protect my family, it is a fictional work that is based strongly in actual events.

I am so excited to stumble upon this and I greatly appreciate your generosity.

Thanks!

I am revising (again!) an 83,000 word novel (genre: women's fiction) entitled CLIENT RELATIONS. Partials have already been sent to six agents; two editors and one agent are waiting for partials; one is waiting for a full.

My book is a legal drama about an ambitious young lawyer handling her first solo case, who becomes intimately involved with her celebrity client as his case escalate. Their affair is risky for both of them. What each is willing to sacrifice, and why, are entirely different.

The book is aimed at readers who enjoy Lisa Scottilini, Julie James, Avery Corman and Warren Adler.

Blast! I'm not sure how to place my blog link in the right spot, but here I'll try.

In my first blog, I hope to share any information (and some that's plain ol'motherwit) that may help people when they are going after their dream careers. I'm in the process of carving out mine, while I work as an assistant video editor.

In my second blog (which is brand new, and probably won't show up in google engine for about 30 days), I pass on any info I can regarding writing.

I'm working on my first full-length novel, but I'm not sure how to classify it (not a good sign, I know), but I think it's closer to urban lit than anything else.

I just started blogging (1 week)...I have a science and economic background so creative writing does not come easy but I enjoy it and am inspired through all the books and blogs I read. Still working on channeling that creative side so it doesnt come across insipid or inane like a scientific journal...

My true passion is healthy cooking and from that stemmed my blog...Through this blog I'd like to share my personal stories that have been an inspiration to me in the kitchen and one of my main goals is to broaden peoples views on Indian food. There are so many wonderful and healthy options out there in terms of indian cuisine, which people just don't know about, and I would like re-live these memories with each family member that has inspired me in one way or another and blog about the experience and share the recipes...hopefully turning it into a culinary memoir...

What a helpful series you've been writing, thank you so much!
I've recently begun writing a humorous non-fiction book that has the working title, "Dating Diary of a Mormon Girl". I did in fact keep a dating diary of every single date I went on until I was nearly engaged (I know I'm weird!). In writing this, I would also like to give a glimpse into the unusual dating culture that Mormons have.

I'm looking forward to the rest of your publishing series. Thanks!

I too have several books I am trying to figure out how to get published. The first one is for women/moms and the people who have read it compared it to the modern day I love lucy episodes! I also have several children's books that I will hopefully hear back from a publisher on, and last a few books for young boys that I am looking for a partner to help me finish. So pretty much I can't really call myself an author cause I don't have sh*t published yet! Thanks for info!

So I've had a desire in my heart for a while to write a book specifically about sexuality from the perspective of a Christian young woman, since I think this topic is very taboo in the church.

I've started building my platform around a blog (just newly created!) http://kesteele.wordpress.com and I've already met with several people (in the publishing world) who think the topic & content hasn't been adequately discussed, so I'm DIVING IN! I just stumbled onto this project, and I'm ecstatic to find it! I've loved writing since I was young. I'd read books like most kids eat candy.

I got my degree in Journalism in 2003, and I spent time at a newspaper. I found my most joy from writing a weekly column, because it was my personal space to stretch my legs writing. I got fed up with journalism, though, in the course of that job, and I left it to just... chase life, I suppose. Writing has always been present in my life via a personal journal and eventually a blog. I've had COUNTLESS people tell me I need to focus on writing, and only in the last six months have I realized they were right -- its my true love. So thankfully my husband has backed my choice place my focus towards writing (supplementing our income through some small design projects as they come my way) and is taking this ride with me.

So as I throw myself head first into chasing my dream, I find myself learning as I go. This project is EXACTLY what I have been looking for to help me find my way through this crazy industry!

THANK YOU!

I currently write a blog about learning how to figure skate as an adult. I started it since I found myself loosing many hours writing the same email over and over to my family and friends that were following my exploits on the ice.
