DIY Wooden Food Photography Boards

Hey everyone!

Recently I’ve been trying to upgrade my blog a little bit– making things look more professional and clean cut. I knew I needed to start working on my food photography! For the longest time I wanted to make some plank boards for food backdrops, so a couple weeks ago I finally got to it.

I went to Lowe’s and found the craft board section. The boards I chose are 1/4 inch thick, 2.5″ wide, and 2′ long. I used twenty of them to create a 2′x2′ board with different colors on each side. I also bought a solid 2′x2′ wood board (with no planks) to paint a solid color on each side.

The bottom picture is another version of planks I was considering with 4″ wide boards– but I decided that for food photography, the smaller planks would look better, as you’d be able to see the separation in between the planks in pictures better than the larger ones.

I also bought wood glue, paint brushes, and an assortment of colors. I got yellow, white, brown and light blue. Just FYI– use the foam brushes. The one with bristles tended to break off and get stuck in the paint.

First, I painted ten planks white and ten planks light blue and let them dry.

Then I laid four perpendicular boards down on the back of the light blue boards and glued them into place, and then glued the white planks directly on top in the same direction as the light blue. Picture shows better than words can!

After gluing everything down, I stacked some heavy books on top and let them dry overnight.

Now with the white and light blue boards out of the way, I painted my solid 2′x2′ slab of wood yellow on one side and brown on the other, letting it dry before flipping it over.

Voila! Finished product. Four different colors on only two boards.

I’m a HUGE fan of the white and teal boards. I love the planks, they make the pictures look awesome. I have a feeling I’ll be making more plank boards in the future!

What do you guys think? What colors should I do more plank boards? Have you made wooden photo boards?
