[Editor's Note: Roni Noone muses on whether one truly needs a Twitter account in order to build the reach of their blog (or brand). Even more interesting, she gives a few ways people can be moderately involved with Twitter without spending a great deal of time on the site. --Mel]

I am a huge twitter fan. It helps bring traffic to my blog and expand my reach. I’ve also met some great friends (whom I’ve met in real life since) and love the conversational aspects of it.

That being said, I don’t think hopping on the twitter bandwagon is required to build a successful blog. Actually, I think it can hurt your efforts if you force it. When people do things simply because they think they have to, it rarely returns good results.

Read Roni Noone's post about Twitter here, and let us know what other advice you would give to someone who wants to get their feet wet with Twitter but doesn't want to dedicate a lot of time to the site.

Twitter can be such a useful tool for bloggers! I agree with Roni that it can drive traffic to your site. Twitterfeed has also been my friend, and it's such an essential part of twitter strategy. Also, hashtags are another useful tool. Adding a hashtag in the prefix section of twitterfeed makes your content searchable due to the topic. If you're a food blogger, try words like #food or #health.

Great advice here. I plan to start twittering soon.

Facebook is a meh complement to my personal site (and my separate, personal FB profile is private) but for the community site I co-moderate? FB is f***ing essential -- much to my surprise.

Twitter: different persona than the personal site, same persona as community site. But tweeting about posts does boost traffic on both sites.

I hope not. I dumped Twitter a month or so ago, because I didn't use it. :p

I have a Twitter account but rarely use it. I'm on FB everyday, though.

I don't have Twitter--maybe I should, but it's just not something that I'm interested in, and I figure that if I'm not interested in it, I'd probably not update it frequently enough to matter.

Could care less about Twitter but LOVE Facebook. My fan page is a great compliment to my blog. So far I'm not loving Google+, but I'll give it a while longer before giving up completely.

Google+ is also making itself difficult to ignore. #sigh

Absolutely. Even though it seems like we are all somewhat "selling to each other" I am consistently amazed at the fantastic writing and neat ideas that everyone brings to the table. Obviously brands are taking notice also, so as a collective effort, bloggers are making a difference. Social media sites are making that happen.

I think that both Twitter & Facebook are musts for bloggers. Without a doubt.
