The topic for the December NaBloPoMo Day #2 asks how I self-define: as a leader, a follower, or a collaborator. As usual, an excellent and thought-provoking question.

In my work life, I manage a team of seven writers and editors, as well as support staff, but we also work together as a team.

As I look over my life, I can see that I have certainly evolved into a leader. While I may have been in charge of a committee here or a project there, I was never really in positions of leadership. Although I often marched to my own drummer, I generally followed the rules and stayed in my lane.

A couple of decades ago, however, career choices that I made led me into more and greater leadership positions. Over this time, I have learned a lot about how to be an effective leader, shaped by my belief that the best leaders are those who know that they are meant to serve those who follow them.

So I would now comfortably define myself as a strong and effective leader, but especially as a servant leader.
