Do Two-Piece Bathing Suits Sexualize Kids?
By Tes Solomon Sil... on April 24, 2013
Summer may not be here yet, but department and online stores already have their swimsuit line ready for the season. It's not uncommon for consumers to start shopping for swimsuits earlier in the game, but would you reconsider your bathing suit choice if it was perceived as sexualizing your child?
Currently, Gwyneth Paltrow's lifestyle site, GOOP, has come under scrutiny for featuring children's bikinis. While the collection in question offers swimsuits to both women and children, the one in question is perceived as sexualizing girls. This two-piece bikini has incurred quite a stir.
Looking at the photo of a young girl wearing this two-piece bikini, it doesn't project sexuality to me. I have to wonder why this specific bikini was deemed inappropriate since the bikini in question is not padded and looks like any swimsuit that can be purchased at any department store.
As someone who has a 14-year old daughter who has had to choose bathing suits pending my approval, I can see how my daughter's choice and mine may vary, but in the end, it all boils down to appropriateness. I have chosen my daughter's bathing suits since she was a young child, but as a teen, I understand that her fashion sense is constantly changing. I also know that even if she would prefer to buy a two-piece swimsuit that is too old for her, it's up to us as her parents to let her know that it's not the right bathing suit for her at this time. As for the two-piece bathing suit in question, it will be interesting to see if the controversy continues. That's my view on this, what's yours?
