Do you decorate for Halloween?

In my neighbourhood here in Houston, people go completely insane when it comes to Halloween.  Starting about 2 weeks after the school year begins, houses in my area start putting pumpkins out on their front porch, there are "bats" hanging from the trees, fake cobwebs and tombstones all over the front yards.  At first, I thought it was the homes that had hyper-excited young children who had been forced into putting out all the decorations, but now I'm not so sure:  the house with the most decorations, to my knowledge, is owned by a childless couple.

I'm not sure I get it.

I grew up on the Caribbean, where Halloween isn't a huge thing; however, because I went to an American elementary school, we did dress up and trick or treat.  No one, however, ever actually put Halloween decorations up, and even when my family moved to the States when I was a teenager, I don't remember seeing any Halloween decorations, save for the occasional party that I attended.  In fact, it seems like it's only been the last 5 years or so that decorations are all-of-a-sudden a big deal.

I think, left to our own devices, my husband Marcus and I would opt out of decorating our home for Halloween, and simply dress our child for trick-or-treating.  However, a few years ago, a friend with a macabre sense of humour bought my husband a "Marcus the Carcass" -- a glow-in-the-dark lawn decoration that looks like a corpse trying to crawl its way out of the ground.  It's truly horrifying, but each year, we now feel compelled to put it on our lawn, despite our shame.

Although, secretly, I think it's funny.

How about you -- are you a big Halloween decorator?  Is it me, or is this something that seems to have become more popular recently?

Seriously, you should put the photo right into your post!

We have modest decorations, but the kids always want more more more!  In fact, we are late getting them up this year...

There are some awesome houses in our neighborhood as well.  Some have kitschy junk and some are really spooktacular with flying ghosts, scary zombies walking the yard and even hearses.

My mom grew up in Georgia, and she says that the people on her block, including her mother, went nuts decorating for Halloween. My mom continued the tradition and goes all out every year, but she never puts up any decorations before October first. Now that I am out on my own, I am itching to decorate for Halloween, but with a move to a new apartment looming on the horizon, I've only put up a few small things.

here in the philippines, I think, I haven't seen any home that have halloween decorations, maybe because as early as with the starting with the "ber" months, people are already preparing their christmas decorations. Its a traditon here to spend the day in the cemetery to be with their relatives who are already gone.

Must be the influence of my Mom but she always had something decorating the front door and so do I. That being said, half of the neighborhood has put up "Halloween lights". YIKES!

I agree - decorations seem to be more elaborate all the time. When my kids were little, we would carve a pumpkin and a funny skeleton with jointed arms and legs. I always felt that Halloween was difficult for me to "celebrate" because of the pagan background and disgusting costumes, so my kids stuck to only costumes of things created by God - no zombies, ghosts, monsters, etc.

Honestly, where do people get the money to spend on so many decorations? And couldn't that money be used for something more important?

This is my first Halloween in the US. Our place is out the back of a bigger place so no one would see decorations but us. I think I might like to try carving a pumpkin though, since I never have. A few houses on my street are decorated - I think it's fun!
