Do You Know Your Basic Metabolic Rate?

When I first learned about the Basic (or Basal) Metabolic Rate concept, it was a huge “ah-ha” moment for me.  I wish I had known about this number a long time ago.

This number tells us how many calories our bodies burn at rest — doing nothing at all — except performing normal bodily functions like our heart beating and breathing.

You can determine your Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR) with this simple calculation:

DIVIDE YOUR WEIGHT BY 2.2
MULTIPY THAT NUMBER BY 8.7
ADD 829 to THAT NUMBER

THE LAST NUMBER= YOUR BMR RATE.

I learned that my BMR number is 1340, sometimes referred to as the free daily calories, because these are the calories I burn without any of my daily activities.

If you want to factor in your age and sex, here’s an automatic calculator. It takes into consideration that our metabolic rate slows as we age and that men have a higher BMR than women.

Think about your BMR as a start point.  If these are the amount of calories that you burn each day no matter what, and you want to eat more, then – you, me – all of us need to rev up our activity.  It’s really that simple.

Remember, if I can do it, so can you.
