Do You Need a Light Box for your Pictures?

[Editor's note: A lot of food bloggers -- and anyone else who takes photos of smallish things indoors -- use a light box. It lets you diffuse your light and control its direction and color temperature, avoiding harsh shadows and glare. Nags has a great tutorial about making a light box, starting with the first question for any amateur photographer: "Do you really need this? -- Julie]

Although a light box gives you the flexibility to click pictures of your food whenever you'd like, nothing can beat natural light when it comes to food photography. Let me repeat that -- nothing. A lot of professional food photographers may go for fancy studio equipment but the beauty of food blogging from our homes and kitchens is, this is what we make for our family meals, we are sharing our recipes and what we cook on a day-to-day basis. I wouldn't compare that to commercial food photography any day.

I keep thinking I should. And I keep being lazy. Whoops.

I bought a photo cube on eBay awhile back. I use it every once in awhile. It does make colors (especially food) look true to life. In my kitchen the lights cast a yellow tint (fluorescents?)

Now I tend to just use my iPhone and live with it

I've been a victim of the bad lighting photo a few times. :D I think it would be a good idea to try one, but I also think I am just too lazy to do it. Even though it is harder to hunt that elusive perfect natural lighting, I really do prefer it.

Good tip.
