Do Your Research

During the course of teaching last school year I planned and taught a lesson to my students about the importance of recognizing media bias and getting news from a variety of reputable news sources. As anyone who is on any form of social media knows not everyone has learned this lesson because we all have that friend or those several friends who are reposting every single conspiracy theory or scandal that they come across. This annoys me to no end, and often times I want to point out the fallacy in their logic. As I get older I am trying to just “let it go.” But sometimes it’s just so darn hard!

Recently two people posted the same erroneous article about the Boston bombing which basically implied that the whole thing was a huge government conspiracy to distract America from something else that the President wanted to get done without hearing our opinions. Even as I typed that I felt the ridiculousness of it seep out of the computer screen. These two friends of mine believe that this could legitimately be true, and the idea that they are getting their news from a mish mash of different sources none of whom are from tried and true broadcasting companies.

Further investigation on my part lead me to several conspiracy theorists groups, anti-government groups, and extremist blogs, all of whom were contributors to this news source. I know we all have these friends who post and re-post every single internet scandal.

I just wanted to write this PSA to let everyone know that Apple is not offering us free iphones because of some scratch and dent sale, the President is not blowing up his own people as a distraction, and you do not have dead royal Nigerian relatives that want to give you a lot of money.

While all media and news reporting sources are likely not true there are some real sources out there, so I encourage everyone to check and re-check before passing on their erroneous news. It gets tiring logging on to facebook wanting to see who is getting married, having a baby, or posting cute vacation photos only to have to scroll through all of the various non-sense depicting giveaways, political issues, and scams.

Just please do us all a favor and at least google a few more possibilities before declaring that our President is blowing up Americans just to get us to look the other way for a few minutes.
