After reading Getting Enough by Leonard Rosmarin, it made me stop and think about how many marriages fail when one or both partners go through the dreaded "Midlife Crisis."

The blurb for the book reads: A scandalous portrayal of a beautiful seductive Jewish Diva named Vera Rose, whose life is at a tipping point and ready to implode.  Trapped between a mid-life crisis and the affliction of an unfulfilling sexless marriage, Vera is compelled to escape her repressive existence, after an explosive argument with her husband, Sidney. She reflects on her life and decides to unleash her true self and takes her niece’s husband, Boris as her lover. As relationships begin to crumble around her, Vera is surprisingly struck by the realization that she has unfairly misjudged Sidney as the despicable wretch and sexual failure she loves to hate. Together they unexpectedly manage to work out a loving reconciliation.

First, I want to mention that Getting Enough is absolutely hilarious.  It's so real, so honest and open, it was like peering into the author's very soul.  He didn't write the book, the book wrote itself.  This was a story that had to be told.  We so often hear about couples cheating on one another.  How they've grown dissatisfied with their love life and so chose to seek intimacy elsewhere.

But is this the answer?  Will an affair truly make one happy?  A few moments of puffing and panting and skin-on-skin action won't change who you are inside.  It won't strip away your dissatisfaction.  It won't make the marriage better or make it go away.

Instead, what Mr. Rosmarin has so cleverly woven into his truth-based-fiction tale is that we need to see ourselves and our partner through new eyes.  Fix what's broken, don't just throw it all away.  If you loved one another before, you can fall in love all over again.  If there's a glimmer of hope in your hearts then you owe it to yourselves to shed the armor you've been wearing and stand naked before your partner--figuratively and literally--and love who you both are, inside and out.  Now that may truly be the best love affair you could ever have.
