Does Prayer Really Work?

It struck me yesterday, though- the fact that so many were sending love and energy to this child and that I was praying so wholeheartedly for him.  I felt good about doing it and felt like it was helping.

Prayer

Most people who know me and who know my family are aware that we aren’t religious in any shape or form. We never will be- for reasons we’ve agreed upon.

I’ve often wondered about prayer, though, and my partner and I discuss matters of the soul, the spiritual, and of a higher power often. We discuss whether souls exist, where souls might go if, indeed, they exist and what happens after death.  We talk about prayer and how it might help, or who it might help.

I’ve thought for quite a while now that prayer and meditation are things we do for ourselves that lift our consciousness to another level. To me prayer is aligning my energy with the person or situation I’m focusing on.  If I’m praying or meditating on a certain situation occurring in my personal life, I feel prayer sorts out the conscious and unconscious enough to allow an answer to come from ‘somewhere’. Is it God? I don’t know, and I don’t care, for that matter.

I think whether there is or isn’t a God is none of my business. It just doesn’t matter.  What does matter to me, is love and is sending that love out to people. It matters to me to look within, because that’s where the answers are. We already know the answers to most things…and I’m not saying this in a narcissistic way, mind you. I’m saying that God is within…whatever this God thing is.

We know the answers and we can affect people in ways we can’t even comprehend. We’re all connected.

What’s my point, you ask? I’m wondering how you feel about prayer and the power behind it.

Oh, and please pray for sweet little Lucas.  He could really use it right now.

I think you are doing all the spiritual questioning and thinking and sharing. I believe in prayer. I don't think it's a magic wand that makes good things happen. But I like the lining up your energy with (what I would say) God. I think it opens up pathways. I am an Episcopalian,  A Christian feminist. And I count on a Higher Power in my 12 Step work. But I had to do a lot of processing of my anger and hurt toward God for God's seeming  abandonment of me as a child.. We are all on our paths. I acknowledge yours.. Barbara

I like your brand of non-religion. You get the biggest lesson of the new testament better than many life-long Christians. I'm a believer but I dont care so much if someone talks the talk as long as they walk the walk.

Faith, hope and love.....the greatest of these is love. That is a scripture reference from the book of Coronthians. Indeed God is love. He is the greatest example of love, ever known to man. How precious of you, to care for this young child. Only God knows that plans that lie ahead for Lucas. I will be praying for Lucas and his family. After my prayer, I will have faith, in God, that I have been heard and someone with all prayer is in control.

xcape2beach Thank you very much!! Lucas seems to be doing better- he'll be in the hospital for quite a while, but appears to be making improvements. Prayers and love... they work.

You said: "I think whether there is or isn’t a God is none of my business. It just doesn’t matter. What does matter to me, is love..."

I think I heard somewhere that "God is Love".

Erin, that was truly beautiful. Thank you for your prayers for Lucas. I also too, felt all the positive energy and prayers for my sister and brother- in law. I do feel in my heart it made a difference. Lucas and Rowan have a Big purpose in this life. I feel that we are the lucky ones that get to be a part of their lives. Thank for your friendship. I am so glad you and Elaine have each other.

Lots of love,
Maureen

By the way, I shared just a few of those stories here: http://aladyinfrance.com/2012/01/16/prayer-and-humor/ if it's not bad manners to link back to my blog (and you feel like reading). :-)

Lady Jennie Not bad manners at all! I look forward to reading...

It's really great to see your heart to pray for other people.

I'm a Christian - grew up one in a moderate sense, but made an adult decision to embrace it - so I'm coming from a slightly different angle. But I have prayed too many unusual make-it-hard-for-God prayers that have come true for me to be left in doubt that they are heard.

Of course sometimes he says no too.

I'll pray for little Lucas.

There is actually an App for talking to God. I downloaded it. It is kinda awesome as it has categories of how you feel, then there are bible readings then a short reflection to read in regards to your feeling. For example, Sad, Prideful, Out of control, Addicted, Apathetic, Optimistic and so on.

I struggle with prayer and how it should be done and what belongs where and forget that sometimes just TALKING to God is good enough.

I am torn over my feelings about prayer. I was raised believing in prayer and have always prayed but in the past three years, through the loss of three grand babies ( one each year) I lost a lot of my belief in prayer. And that saddens me. But I prayed ferociously each time my daughter experienced complications with her pregnancies - and many, many others prayed for her and the well being of her unborn baby as well. All to a heart breaking end. After three years - and no positive outcome - it's just not possible for me to believe that prayer works. People say God answers - just not always in the way we want - but after so many disappointments, I just can't go to Him and pray for his help. But I still do pray thanks for the blessings I have been given and I will say a prayer for another as I do think it's the support and show of love and concern that helps those in need. With that said, Lucas is in my thoughts and a prayer will be said for him.

MBryt1 I'm so sorry for your sadness... I can sure understand your feelings. I hope you're able to reconcile in whatever way and direction you need. Thoughts with you.

I agree wholeheartedly! I don't believe in god, but I wouldn't discourage someone from praying/meditating/introspection - all of them are great things that can bring peace of mind and heart. And, I also agree that I don't care how it comes about, whether a belief in god or through ones own introspection, if it works then "I don't care" how it comes about. Great post!

@alienbody Thanks so much! Nice to know I'm not alone...

I believe prayer works. I think you touched on something very important when you wrote that you felt like by praying you were helping. Sometimes it's all we can do. I have a friend whose son was going into brain surgery and she knew we were all praying for her. She said it helped so much - she felt like there was an "army" of people walking into the hospital with her, she felt the power of all those prayers and it gave her strength. She knew she was not alone. Prayer also changes the person who is praying. When we pray, we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, to ask for help, to not have all the answers, to surrender. So, yes, it works. It gives strength to those we pray for and it brings calm to us who pray. I also happen to believe that God hears our prayers. He loves us and encourages us to share our worries with Him.

ErinMayer 6 pts

suebidstrup I totally agree! When our son was first diagnosed with his condition and was in the hospital struggling, I knew so many were praying for us. It helped so much. I'd forgotten that feeling till you mentioned it. Thanks!

I believe prayer can help the pray-er. I believe it can help the person you're praying for if they believe in the power of prayer. I don't believe this has anything to do with any mystical force... it has to do with the power of the human brain to heal itself and heal the body.

midnightbliss 13 pts

during the bad times, i get my strength through prayers. though not all of them are answered but it gives you something to hold on to when things seem hopeless.

I believe very strongly in the power of prayer. Not only do I believe in the benefit of "lifting our consciousness to another level" but I believe there is a God who listens and cares enough to answer.

ErinMayer 6 pts

JewelsD I really appreciate you taking the time to comment... Love your convictions.

Prayer provides comfort for me, it's a time to meditate, to focus on the good, and feel the need to have some form of control over the chaos in life. It's with prayer that gives you light in times of darkness.

ErinMayer 6 pts

victorias_view I completely agree. Thanks, Victoria.

Thanks to everyone for commenting- smart women! What I meant by 'none of my business' is that I don't suspect it matters much whether there is or isn't an afterlife or a being or a God- I don't think it matters which religion a person is or whether a person worships in a church or in a field or at all, for that matter. I think it matters more what we do each day to help others. In the end, whatever is- just is. So in that respect, it just isn't my business! I can understand how religious folks will object. And that's ok.

Of course! And it does more than help! It is the solution to any and every thing. It's the only "one size fits all" solution!!!!

There's an interesting book called "Praying for Strangers." It's about someone who made the conscious choice to pray for a stranger every day. Positive thoughts and/or energy/prayer/whatever you'd like to call it, can't hurt - might help.

No, I don't pray. I believe it helps you alone, which is fine & vital at times for people to get through the challenge ahead of them. But in the end, you need to get off your knees & do something.

I don't know how to specifically help Lucas' family, but I know our local NICU families are always in need of a touch of comfort. A Starbucks card, a warm blanket for the long hours of sitting, someone to sit with their baby while they go home & tend to their other children. My prayers alone are never going to do those things.

For those of you who saw my comment, I didn't read the blog first to get the context. Sorry. There's a time and place for that kind of stuff, and this isn't it. Sending positive energy for Lucas.

Yes, yes and yes. But I don't stop at just a prayer if I can help it. I use that prayer as a moment to also reflect and figure out what *I* can do to help. Not just leave it up to God to help someone. Because I was raised that God can do a lot but if everyone doesn't do anything, then there is only so much that can be done.
See a homeless person? Absolutely pray for them. But also, give them some food and keep those cards in your purse that are pocketsized and every state prints out listing resources for the homeless.
A family's house burns down? Sure, pray. But also get together with others and try to get them clothing, shelter, tel #s for assistance, etc.
"Without community, there might as well be no God." I forget who said that but imo it's true.

My grandpa used to say, "pray for others because they need the prayers & you need the practice". Mega-cool guy.

Without God there is no Love. Of course it is your business and it does matter. People ignore the Truth when it is staring them right in the face. We live in a fallen world but if God chose to withdraw the Holy Spirit completely from this earth 'fallen' would not do the evil that we would see justice.

I agree Barb Lambert. I believe in prayer with 100% of my heart. It saddens me to hear people say such things :-( God is wants our faith in him to be our priority.

Barb Lambert

Of course it does. And to say God is none of your business, what an odd thing to say. At the end I'm sure you'll want him to be your business and you will offer up informal bits of words or prayer.
