The Dog Didn't Eat Tea Bags
By Betty Fokker on October 09, 2013
I am currently being driven over the brink by people sharing far-right memes on my Facebook feed. I am not offended because their political opinions differ from mine. Nope nope nope. I am ready to pull my hair out because the stuff they are saying is untrue. These are people who don’t typically lie, so Imma go out on a limb and say that they are spreading information that someone *cough Faux News cough* has told them is true -- without ever bothering to fact check it!!
The first meme I saw today that made me gnash my teeth and rend my clothing was one about how Obama is “spitefully” closing federal parks and letting children with cancer die. First, the parks are closed because the federal government is one ‘essential’ operations only. Employees have been furloughed. This is what HAPPENS when the federal government is SHUTDOWN. The shit it runs is mostly shutdown TOO. This is not a “whim” like the GOP is claiming. Moreover, if the Far Right was soooooo concerned about national parks, WTF were they doing when they gutted funds for those parks for the last 20+ years???? As for Obama letting kids with cancer die … this started back in the spring and it was the fokking far right who wanted Medicare slashed to the point it can’t pay for the treatments.
The irony of the GOP suddenly caring about access to health care when they are holding the entire government at gun point to try to defund a constitutionally approved LAW that would provide access to health care is mind boggling.
The second meme I saw that made my blood boil is myth that the GOP is all ready to negotiate. Bullshit. What the far-right Republicans are doing is offering to pay for – in dribs and drabs – the things that are closed that are also hurting them with the voters. “With national parks and war memorials closed, House Republicans are now looking for ways to blunt the shutdown's damage, one politically sensitive part of the government at a time. They plan to approve smaller spending bills that would fully fund veterans programs, the National Park Service and the District of Columbia.”
The Daily Show did a fabulous segment on GOP “negotiation”. I’d have laughed harder if it wasn’t so damn sad.
The third meme that made my head explode is the suggestion that Obama and the Democrats are the ones who wanted the shutdown. That is such a pile a crap. The Teabaggers in the GOP have been aching to get a shutdown for a good long while. Worse, the Tea Baggers have got the normal Republicans by the short & curlies because Boehner gave into the extremist twatwaffles. There are enough members of the GOP right now who would vote with the Democrats to pass the budget IF BOEHNER WOULD JUST LET THE VOTE HAPPEN. Why doesn’t he call the vote? Because the Tea Baggers won’t LET him. I am not making this shit up. Some GOP donors told reporters that Rep. Greg Walden, the fokking chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said to their faces that “We have to do this because of the Tea Party. If we don’t, these guys are going to get primaried and they are going to lose their primary.”
The final meme that have left me running amuck and shrieking is that Obama is equally to blame for the shutdown. NO. The shutdown is centered on the fact that the GOP is trying to kill the Affordable Care Act even though it is a law and the Republicans lost the vote on it. The Republicans of Teabagistan are actively trying to subvert democracy and impose their will upon the people of the USA. Obama is refusing to give in to their shenanigans.“Obama lambasted Republicans for making the dismantling of the health care law the "centerpiece of their agenda," and he urged them to pass a budget and end the government shutdown. "I will not give in to reckless demands by some in the Republican Party to deny affordable health insurance to millions," Obama said. "I will not negotiate over Congress' ability to pay bills it's already racked up.” Fighting BACK against a blackmailer is NOT the same thing blackmail.
The mendacity of the GOP trying to blame the POTUS and the Democrats for this hella unpopular shutdown nightmare is almost more than I can comprehend. I cannot sum it up better than John Stewart, who told the GOP not to “fart and point at the dog”.
