Don't Be an April Fool: Back Up Your Blog
Yesterday, March 31st, was World Backup Day, a day set aside to remind you of all the horrible things that could befall your blog or photos or documents if you don't make a copy of them... NOW. (Apologies, I had to pause for a moment to run and make copies.) In all seriousness, it's important to have backup copies so if the worst does happen, it's an inconvenience instead of a tragedy. Right now, we're going to walk you through how to do this.
There is very little you need beyond some space on your computer, blank discs, and an external hard drive. If you want to get fancy, you can purchase online space in the form of cloud storage.
Let's start with your blog. A while back, I posted about a poor man's blog backup that everyone can do immediately -- even without any blog maintenance skills.
There are 10,000 ways to back up your blog, depending on how nervous you are about the possibility of losing your written thoughts. There are manual backups and plug-ins that can create a scheduled backup. You can put it on a thumb drive or a portable hard drive or save it to your computer or save it to the Cloud. And all of those back ups are important because they will help you restore your blog if anything ever happens.
What is the most important part of your blog? The content: the blog posts, the comments, the layout so you can remember where everything goes. And for that, you can do a poor man’s backup. Right now.
After you have your poor man's backup in place, use the guides below to back up your blog depending on which software you use to create your space.

Next, move to your documents. Make an additional copy of all important documents on your external hard drive. If you don't have an external hard drive, you can also save these documents to disc. Make sure you clearly mark the date on the discs because you will throw out your old copies the next time you create new, updated copies.
Lastly, let's move to your photographs. I like to make a copy on disc AND a copy on an external hard drive. Some people also like to back up their photos to cloud storage. Read Write Web has a great post examining their five favourite options for online storage.
