Don't forget the salt, the pepper and the flaxseed....
by Catherine Morgan

Add fresh ground flax seed to your morning oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal.
Start your day with an infusion of fiber and omega-3. Just add some flax seed to your oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal.

I usually buy my flaxseed and then grind it up as I need it. But you can also buy it as "meal" at your local health food store. The most important thing to remember about flaxseed is to keep it refrigerated.

Flaxseed is very high in fiber and omega-3 essential fatty acids (the good fats). The best part is, you can add it to just about anything.

My personal favorite is; adding about a tablespoon to my yogurt.

My mother says...Don't forget to salt, pepper, and flaxseed.

Do you have a favorite food that you like to add flaxseed to? Let me know in comments.

oy..so many things to remember

OK, I start the day with vitamins, E,D, B-complex, Multi for over 50 women, fish oil, zinc, St John's Wort, Soya Lecithin, Glucosamine Chondritin, Potasium and magnesium.....and now I have to add flax seed? I'm open to considering, but what will it do for me?

Help everything move along

Flax is nice way to get things, er, moving. Forget those fiber drinks, this is an easy way to get all the fiber you need. And it provides a nice texture when you add it to food. I like to sprinkle on salads or cooked greens. http://doesabodygood.blogspot.com/2007/10/flaxseed-know-how.html

Also great in baked goods

The flaxseed oil gives paler baked goods, like scones, a pretty golden-brown color.  I also sprinkle it in muffins, cookies, cakes, breads or whatever else I'm mixing up.

Great post!

I really like the extra flavor that a bit of flaxseed adds to things. I've been eating peanut butter oatmeal lately for breakfast, and this is a good reminder for me to start adding some flaxseed to my oatmeal. Thanks for featuring my cookie recipe too!

Flax is the best

We add it to smoothies and pancakes. Unfortunatley, it a safer source of Omega-3 than some of the fish we have access to.

Staples

I love flax! It's great to see that other people do as well! I always put whole flax seeds, and sunflower in my oatmeal while it's cooking, and into my bread dough. I'll have to add some to my other baked goods, like RTW suggested, thanks! I've read a few articles about omega-3 helping fight the effects Alzheimer's

In my oatmeal every morning

I purchase the ground flax seed and add it to my cooked oatmeal every morning (along with some cinnamon and cardamon.) It's a great way to get that some of that Omega-3 EFA we need. I also sprinkle it on salads.

Because the oil is so fragile (hence the refrigerate) I try not to add it to foods before cooking.

soaking

Even better when soaked over night. The same goes for the oatmeal.
