Drill, baby, drill? No, baby, no!

So yesterday, my heart sank while watching GOP delegates hold up
signs and chanting the mantra “Drill, baby, drill!” any time a speaker
mentioned “energy independence.” Sarah Palin argued that the drilling
solution is only a bridge until we build alternative solutions,
acknowledging that the US will never have enough oil to sustain itself
forever.

But she along with Guliani and other speakers, mislead the public by
arguing that Americans cannot afford to “throw away” their paychecks at
rising oil and gas costs. Michael Steele first put out the phrase in his speech, saying:

“So, do you want to put your country first?,” said former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele,
one of the Republican Party’s few prominent black politicians. “Then
let’s reduce our dependency on foreign sources of oil and promote oil
and gas production at home.

“In other words: Drill, baby, drill! And drill now!,” Steele said.
“So, do you want to put your country first? Then let’s make decisions
about our security based on what keeps us safe and not on what’s
politically correct.”

Yeah, look I hate the fact that in 2001 it cost only 11 bucks to
fill up my Civic and now it costs close to 40 dollars. I hate it. But
offshore drilling and opening up ANWR is NOT going to lower my bills.
A U.S. Energy Information Administration report won’t have an effect on
prices before 2030. TWENTY-THIRTY!

Why are we going to destroy more of the earth when it won’t do any
good? I’m all for lowering the cost of living - hell I can barely
afford anything these days. But if this supposed “bridge” to get us to
energy independence and alternative energies isn’t going to work, then
why are we trying to build it?

This is worse than a bridge to nowhere. This is a bridge to death…
