Drivin' Teens..Drivin' Me Crazy

The date is looming.  It's getting closer and closer.  I've dreaded
the date since she was about 2 years old.  Of course, I didn't think
about it much then but recently I've been thinking about it a lot.
That date of course, is the date my daughter is eligible to receive her
driver's permit.  She's been thinking about it a lot, in fact, she's
been working on the "online driving school" program pretty diligently.
Pretty corny program too if you ask me..(the driver/guy looks like a
bad B movie actor and script is overly dramatic - do they think teens
are idiots??)

Driving (for teenagers) is more than just the act of steering a car.  For them, it is their link to being free
It's ironic to me (only now that I'm older) because she has more
freedom  on her bicycle than she will have in a car.  She'll have to
call me for one thing - not something she has to do on her bike (at
least, all the time) and the law states she cannot have anyone else in
the car - so no socializing.

I remember when I got my driver's license.  It seemed like my
parents were hounding me about where I was going, what I was doing, who
I was with MUCH more than when I was toolin' around on my bike.  It's
ironic. But, teens don't see it that way.  It's big girl stuff and one
of the major steps to getting the heck out of the house.  So..... I get
it but I'm not looking forward to it!

I've seen three kids through the driving permit/license stage (though with my son, we mostly skipped the permit phase - he went in when he was 18, got the permit, bought a car the next day, and went back for his real license two days later.)

It is a harrowing, to put it mildly, experience. I am sure I never scared my parents the way my children have scared me. (OK except that one time that I pulled out in front of someone I was sure was going to turn before she got to me - she was a friend! Surely she was driving HOME! Errr. Hah.)

Good luck, I'll be thinking good thoughts for you.
