Drugstore Lip Balm Smackdown!

Things I am obsessed with recently: my checkbook balance and my lips. Which means that it's time for a quick trip to the drugstore for super-affordable lip balms!

The things I do to help you people out. You're welcome.

This week, I'm testing three new balms, all from the Walgreens down the street from my house, and all retailing for under $4.00 each. Perfect.

Yes to Carrots C Me Smile Lip ButterYes to Carrrots C Me Smile Lip Butter,  about $3.50 for one tube.

This is a basic, no-frills lip balm. It's lightly scented but has no discernable taste. It is edible, though, which is kind of nice since it goes on your lips; it's also a good choice for kids, who are often inclined both to overdo the lip balm and to lick it all off after they put it on.

Confessions of a Balmaholic loves this one: "I know that this will be a balm that I have for a long time, because I don’t have to constantly reapply." Good point!

C Me Smile is also a certified organic product, and is Paraben, Petroleum and Phthalate Free (try saying that ten times fast).

Burt's Bees Replenishing Lip BalmBurt's Bees Replenishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil,  about $3.00 for one tube.

Like all Burt's Bees products, this balm is chock full of natural ingredients, like pomegranate oil and beeswax. Goes on smooth and offers some serious hydration for chapped lips. The pomegranate oil gives this balm a slight pinkish tint, which makes it a nice alternative to lip gloss for days when you're not really in a makeup mood.

JennaBee at Bare Budget Beauty liked it, too: "The moment I applied this to my lips, the cinnamon and pomegranate cooled them, and left a
spicy fragrance that I didn't mind at all. The balm felt very
refreshing overall, and I noticed a difference in the smoothness of my
lips instantly."

This balm is 99.5% natural; it has a light, outdoorsy scent and no flavor.

Nivea A Kiss of ShineNivea A Kiss of Shine in Red Glossy, about $3.00 a tube.

If you're hooked on petroleum-based lip balms, like Aquaphor, this is a nice alternative. It comes in a pocket-size tube, with a screw-on top that won't fall off in your bag and an angled tip, for easy hands-free application. And it has just a hint of red (sort of a coral shade, really) which makes it a little more like lip gloss and a little less like slathering your lips in Vaseline.

Downside: Not all natural, sadly, although it does contain some natural ingredients (Shea Butter and Vitamin E). It also has a very slight fruity smell which I could live without. Megan at Not Martha describes it this way: "a cloying sweetness and the flavor of apricots." Exactly.

What's your favorite drugstore lip balm? Or are you a specialty balm girl? I'm still looking for the Perfect Balm, so share what you know!

I'm a drugstore junkie when it comes to beauty products.  I must go to Walgreens every week.  I like the Bonnie Bell liip balms.  However when I'm at home I find that vaseline does wonders for my lips.

I swear by this stuff and used to stock up on trips abroad or have to beg friends to pick it up for me. It used to be available only overseas but I think I have seen it in stores marketed under the Nivea brand.
