Should anyone have any doubts about what I nerd I can be, this next statement should pretty much wrap it up. I fantasize about building a top-drawer, world-class book collection. To someone who hasn’t caught the book-collecting bug, it’s hard to explain the why of it, so let’s just say it’s my fantasy and I’m sticking to it.
It’s oddly comforting then to read about people with similar deviant desires. I suspect that no one has met and written about more of these people than Nicholas Basbanes. Over the years, he’s gathered his bibliophile writings in collections like A Gentle Madness, Patience and Fortitude, and Among the Gently Mad, as well as in regular columns in Fine Books & Collections magazine and the now-defunct Biblio magazine. Basbanes’ latest collection of essays and articles, Editions & Impressions, continues the job of bringing together his excellent writing on book culture and book people.
