Election Day: Which Pie Gets Your Vote, Sweet Potato or Pumpkin?

Today's an important day.

Today, in the U.S., we vote.

We're voting on a lot of things, and one thing's for sure -- politics can get weird. So today I'm bringing it back to the real issues. The things that matter.

The Issues Explained

A New York Times infographic from 2009 shows pumpkin with a strong lead last year.

Pundit Gut Thinking gives the edge to sweet potato on the basis of superior nutrition.

Commenters on Serious Eats debated a few years ago. Consensus was reached on the following points:

  • Sweet potato is fluffier; pumpkin has a custard consistency.
  • Pumpkin has more spices, while sweet potato tastes more like the ingredient.

Vote!

I'm blogging A Month of Pies, aka NaBloPieMo. I'm not promising to bake a pie a day ... but I might. Today, I whipped up this little Bourbon sweet potato number from Cooks Illustrated. I'd vote for it. Twice.

PS: I promise, pie pics will happen.

I hate to say it but I don't think that I have ever had Sweet Potato Pie! My family is composed of a bunch of avid Pumpkin Pie devotees! :)

I am allergic to cinnamon, so I can't eat other peoples' versions of pumpkin pie. But my pumpkin pie has gotten to be quite the masterpiece.

That said...

I've never had sweet potato pie. The thought makes me twitch.

So, I'm voting for MY pumpkin pie and MY pumpkin pie ONLY.

You find sweet potato pie so rarely outside the south, that undoubtedly is my choice. However, I do like myself a good pumpkin pie.

If I had to pick I'd take sweet potato over pumpkin any day, but my favorite pie would always be something citrus like Lemon Meringue and Key Lime Pie!

Julie, I'm impressed that you're making pies. That is NOT one of my culinary skills. Luckily my sister Sandee makes great pie.

Sweet potato pie. It just don't seem to be common in Canada. I may need to make one at some point.

Oh no -- I have to admit, I'm not a fan of pumpkin or sweet potato in terms of eating. I prefer to make pumpkin pie. In fact, I love to make pumpkin pie (my recipe is a pumpkin bourbon pecan pie) because it makes my husband and brother happy. But I'm so not a fan of eating it.

The best pies are from scratch. Both my grandmothers could sling a decent pie.

Thirty pies in thirty days? This thing is contagious.

Good thing I don't have an oven.
