Elton John's Baby a Danger to "Young Shoppers" in Arkansas?

I’ve driven through Mountain Home, Arkansas countless times. The Ozarks were a regular part of my childhood scenery, as my family made a drive from northern Missouri to southern Arkansas and back again a few times every year on visits to my grandparents.

The Ozarks are beautiful, but it wasn’t long before even child-me realized that I probably ought never plan to move there. My mother could would point out which towns had “sundown signs” only a few years before. Exceptions aside (and of course, there are always exceptions), much of Arkansas is just not a friendly place if you are different in any way from the state norm.

I kind of hate to pick on Mountain Home, but the manager of the Harps grocery store there asked for it when putting grey shields, reading, “To Protect Our Young Shoppers” over US Weekly magazine covers featuring Elton John, his partner and their new baby son. The manager said there had been complaints. When a local GLBT group complained louder, the shields were removed.

HOLLYWOOD - JANUARY 23: Executive producer/musician Sir Elton John and Producer David Furnish arrive at the Premiere Of Touchstone Pictures

It’s the height of silly, really, since to look at the magazine, you wouldn’t necessarily even know you were looking at a gay couple and their baby. And, as the GLBT group pointed out, it isn’t exactly Hustler. Let’s face it, Elton John has seen his sexiest days. And even if they did realize they were looking at gay dads, I’m pretty sure no young shoppers were harmed by the magazine cover before the shield was put up or after it was removed.

The whole thing actually makes me wonder if another logic was at play in the store manager’s decision. Remember that bit in Huckleberry Finn when the con men, the “King” and the “Duke” get up a nonsense show in Arkansas? They add a note to the bottom of their playbill warning:

“No ladies or children admitted”

remarking, that “if that don’t fetch ‘em, I don’t know Arkansas.”

Perhaps the shields over the US Weeklies in Mountain Home created just enough prurient curiosity to sell more magazines.

My whole family is from Arkansas. I have spent, probably, a total of five years there, if you put together all the time summers stayed with grandparents and all the camping I've done with family in the beautiful Buffalo National Park.

I did try to make as light as possible of this incident--far more so than most of the media did--because I understand that there is complexity everywhere.

I'm glad you have found a community that has treated you so well.

It's too bad people who aren't straight and white don't feel as welcome as you do.

I will probably never feel safe, taking my partner and children camping on the Buffalo river where I spent so much happy time in my own childhood and that just makes me sad.

I always wonder about them (as I'm stuffing them behind the candy bars). Is the store manager going to ask a gay couple to leave the store? Is he going to ask a woman in a low-cut shirt to leave? Of course not. I'd rather see them not carry that month's issue than put an idiot modesty panel on top of the cover.

Solidarity.

This Elton John thing is such a NON-ISSUE that has been blown way out of proportion! This incident was over almost as soon as it happened and not because Jennifer Huddleston put it on Twitter! She was standing in line and snap a cell phone pic of Elton and got her 15 minutes of fame! Now this area is being ridiculed because of it! True there are stern religious groups here as there is EVERYWHERE and I doubt that will change! Just as you believe as you do. This is still America, I think! You think your way, they think their way, and I think my way? Again, it's everywhere, not just here!
You, my dear Shannon, see a different Mountain Home than I do. I can't let you get away with the sneaky little innuendos you used to define this area and Arkansas in general! There are a lot of gays and people of color in this area and in Arkansas as there is EVERYWHERE! I haven't seen or heard of any cross burnings in their yards nor has anyone been hung from a tree in my 20 years living here! If anything, I have, and have seen, people treat these groups decently and with respect! I don't see them running for their lives! Your talk of "sundown signs" is pure bull! This stuff occurred in the past but not now. Maybe you should come back here stay a while. Why are you trying to scare people away from here?? Arkansas and this area is very friendly! I moved here from Texas. When I lost my first husband after being here only 6 months people I didn't even know were coming to help me. I didn't ask for it either and don't know how they found out. You paint a sad picture of this area and Arkansas that just isn't true! I live here, I see it everyday again for 20 years! There are complaints about the Elton John cover all over this country, so why pick on us? Because we are an easy target? I don't give a rats ass what Elton John does with his life! I don't care what anyone else does with their lives!
How can you make a judgment on Arkansas when you yourself admitted you just "drove through" as a child? LIVING in a place is what forms an opinion, not just a drive through or a temporary stay! You can't trust the media either! You have to have an open mind then live in a place before you can form a true opinion! I lived in Chicago for a year and came away with a totally different opinion of the city - which was a good one! I suggest you do the same before throwing up old fashioned terms and trying to scare the bejesus out of people who have never been here! It is beautiful here people! Good fishing, lakes and rivers, clean air and lots of forest! Don't let people scare you away! Form your own opinion and have an open mind!

If you look at the picture of how the cover worked, first off, you can kind of see the two men, just not the baby. And second, there's a headline at the top about "Golden Globe Hookups."
Trashy stuff is fine, I guess, as long as it's opposite-sex couples being trashy. Just not same-sex couples being wholesome...

I still kinda feel sorry for the guy who put the screens up. He was just trying not to get in trouble with some loud customer and then all this happened and he got is super big, international trouble! (I saw an article about it in the Guardian this morning too.)
Poor little Mountain Home boy...

That just fires me up! I don't understand how two grown adults who love a child is so offensive you have to shield it from view, but that's just me. I just hope that one day my own children will live in a world where that would never happen.

And for the record, my son's favorite book is "And Tango Makes Three" about the 2 Daddy penguins at the Central Park Zoo who "adopt" another penguin's egg (true story). And he'll point out "he has 2 daddies, mum" & I know its one step closer to where I hope everyone will be one day.
