Emergency Vet Hospital: Our First Visit

In all the years my family had a dog, I had never been to an emergency vet clinic until the other night. And, it wasn't a pleasant experience.

First off, every emergency vet clinic should have a vending machine in the waiting room filled with Xanax, or some other human anti-anxiety medication, because I think I would've been able to make better educated decisions while medicated than in a frantic, complete state of panic.

A very long story short, while out to dinner I got a call saying Toby wasn't putting his leg down and was yelping. After several more phone calls and a long debate over feeling bad about ruining everyone's night, (thanks Amy and Lynette for being so amazingly understanding!) I went home to find Toby in extreme pain, unable to put weight on his back right leg and hopping around whining.

[Enter complete panic/worse case scenario thinking]

We had been through similar things before, because Toby has luxating patella in both his back knees. But, this time it was way different. He had a blank look on his face, almost like he was in a different world, would let out a loud yelp when I touched his foot and wouldn't even let me hold him. Something was definitely wrong.

I had some leftover rimadyl from last time he hurts his leg and while researching how long the medication is good for (ours was over two years old) I found some information that said a dog could go into shock if they broke or sprained their leg. That was when I decided it was time to go to the emergency room.

Wrapped in a blue blanket and me almost in tears, Toby and I headed to our first emergency vet visit. Now, you have to understand, Toby's vet has been used by my family for as long I can remember, and vets from his practice also work at the emergency hospital.

That said, the first question out of my mouth probably shouldn't have been, "Is Dr. O'Neil or Dr. Lewis here tonight by any chance?" followed later on by, "Do you think I can wait till morning for x-rays since I would really feel more comfortable with Ira?"

[Note to self: Don't piss off the vets who are taking care of your dog at 1 a.m.]

Now already after 2 a.m., I trusted my gut and decided it was better to wait till morning and go to my regular vet. They gave him two shots, and we went home.Toby had to stay crated and warm, so I put out a futon cushion on the floor and slept next to the crate to make sure he was OK. We woke up to call from my vet's office asking what time I could bring him in.

My vet came to the conclusion Toby had an anterior cruciate rupture. He walked me through all my options and what the next steps were, as well as showed me photos of what it should look like and what a ruptured one looks like. When I walked out of the office to put him in the car, the receptionist ask if he was OK? I said, "kinda." She followed up with, "Are you OK?" Didn't even have to think, "No." And, she smiled.

Toby still isn't using his injured leg, but is on rimadyl and confined to his crate. He did finally start barking again, and doesn't have the spaced out look in his eyes like he had when we left the vet hospital. Monday morning we go back to see my vet, and if Toby is still in pain they will do x-rays and depending on the results, will operate on him.

Toby - I hope you feel better soon.

I've been to the Vet ER four times with our pooch- Dot, she's a springer spaniel. Three of the four times she got bit by a bee or a spider and her face blew up like a balloon. She got prednisone IV and for 4 days later benadryl and pepcid. The first time was when she was a puppy and she swallowed or aspirated a plastic rim off the milk carton. The Vet ERs are so loving and caring. THE BEST. My daughter wants to be a veterinarian just like her grandfather was (my dad).

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts, and sharing your stories. :)

I am happy to share, a few hours ago I picked up Toby from the vet and after they did the x-rays, they decided not to operate, but instead crate rest for two weeks. We go back again in a week for another check up.

:)

I will never forget when Merlin, our Chiweenie (seen in my profile picture), hurt his back really bad. It was the most blood-curdling yelp I had ever heard in my life. My wife was still asleep, and I was in the shower, and he must have twisted a funny direction or something, because I all-of-a-sudden heard him yelping and jumped out of the shower completely soaped up and all to see what had happened. Those instances are never fun, because you have very little means to communicate with them.

Another time, he had an apparent seizure. He acted very strange, laid down, and had that same blank stare that you describe. Those are very scary times, because you have no way to communicate and find out what's happening.

Each time, something like that has happened, we've taken him to our emergency clinic. It's never fun to have to take a pet to the emergency clinic. Like you, this was the first dog we had ever had to take to emergency care like that. Every time we've been, though, the staff have been very helpful and caring. Unfortunately, in our case, the emergency clinic isn't the same as our regular vet, so they don't have a good history on him, but they do what they can nonetheless.

Our first trip to the emergency vet was when our soon to be five year old dog was just over a year old. She started throwing up coffee grounds (aka dried blood) and couldn't keep anything down. I drove like a bat out of hell to our vet's office. He thought ulcer, had her for 24 hours, called me and said, I can't help her, she needs critical care.

While on the way to the critical care vet, she knocked her IV loose and started bleeding all over the back of our truck. By the time we made it to the emergency vet, I looked like an escapee from a murder scene. The dog was bouncing and wagging her tail as happy as a clam.

The muscled her back to the examining area and did all the necessary supportive stuff to keep her going until they figured her out.

I was driving back and forth between my house and emergency vet for the next 48 hours while all manner of scary diagnoses were being bandied about.

On the evening of the third day, they said, come get her, she's fine. No one knows what happened to her. No one knows why she got so sick, but just like that she was better and has never shown another sign of trouble.

Aww I hope he's alright in the end. What a cute little dog.

When I started fostering 4 lab puppies from GA, the first day I got them I had to rush one to the vet ER in the middle of the night - he had pneumonia, he ended up having to stay for a few weeks.
After that one, one by one the others started getting sick :(
I'm surprised they didn't hire me at that hospital after awhile.

But happy to report they are all healthy pooches and adopted into great homes.

Poor Toby!! But he does look really cute bundled in his blue blanket! His cousins Pepe and Carson are sending him love!
