Emmy Awards 2013: The Red Carpet Fashion Recap

BlogHer Original Post

I hear that people watch television shows and go to movies. I, however, watch fashion. I am much more fluent in the designers' names than I am the actresses' (because men's awards-show fashion, no matter how much they try, does not a headline make), so please know that this post is very much all about my favorite sport—red-carpet commentary—and not so much about the shows themselves, though I certainly have my favorites. *cough*Breaking Bad*cough* You'll have to read Deb Rox's Emmy wrap-up to know what it is that actually happened at the show.

But as for what was happening tonight? Well, that was the style on the runway -- I mean, the red carpet, of course. Why else would we now have two full hours to ogle the glamour in the bright California sun before lights go down in the theater?

And tonight's huge trend was instantly clear, as the stars showed up one after the other wearing gowns that were a nearly unanimous celebration of jewel tones: think ruby, sapphire, emerald, amethyst. Truth is? Those colors look great on everyone and always pop in a photograph. But it's that magic combination of dress, hair and personality that makes the world lean forward and go, "Oooooooh!"

So to hear who made me lean forward and hold up my "10" placard (yes, I really have one), and to see photos of the red carpet trends, read on. Please weigh in on the comments! I have one or two favorites I think people will disagree with, and I love nothing more than a little fashion debate. It is a sport, after all.

Jewel Tones

Tina Fey wins. That is all. In Narcisco Rodriguez.

Mindy Kaling Emmys 2013

Mindy Kaling is impossible not to love, in general, but her sophisticated, openwork-neckline bordeaux Georges Chakra dress made it even more impossible.

Carrie Underwood Emmys 2013

Carrie Underwood wowed the red carpet—and Twitter—with her lovely iridescent plum draped Ramona Keveza ballgown. And yes, she also wore the evening's biggest hair trend: sideswept Hollywood glamour waves.

Morena Baccari Emmys 2013

Morena Baccari of Homeland is simply stunning (and simply pregnant) in a bright-ruby grecian-style strapless Alexander McQueen dress -- with a fab diamante belt floating over her beautiful belly.

Michelle Dockery Emmys 2013

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery goes double-decker in a sleek, chic carmine halter paired with a bordeaux hi-lo, both by Prada. The proportions in the skirt make this trend-that-won't-die look good again.

Alyson Hannigan Emmys 2013

Alyson Hannigan didn't get the sideswept hair that was everywhere on the red carpet just right—it looked a little like an accident, not a hairdo—but her deep-purple satin number was on-trend and great on her.

It's not quite a jewel tone, but the color is a major wow! and the best color of the night: Jessica Paré toughens up this calla lily of a turquoise Oscar de la Renta gown with wide black ankle straps.

Sarah Silverman Emmys 2013

Just when I think I'm over the LBD, Sarah Silverman shows up in a simple camisole-style body-con LBD from online retailer Stop Staring (she told reporters it cost $60!) and makes it look new. The Alexander McQueen hoof stilettos look just right with her dark hair and fierce stare. #girlcrush!

Jane Lynch Emmys 2013

Jane Lynch looked amazing and one-hundred percent like herself in Badgley Mischka—always an awards-show favorite.

Christine Baranski Emmys 2013

May Christine Baranski work the red carpets for decades more: She keeps showing up in drop-dead red, and it works for her, every time.

Lena Headey Emmys 2013
Image: © Prensa Internacional/ZUMAPRESS.com

Game of Thrones star Lena Headey is a gorgeous assemblage of fashion-gone-wrong broken rules: three layers of visible Spanx (kidding; I know that's the dress) and a bold white shoe with delicate black lace? It's her rock-star hair and attitude that sells it.

Zooey Deschanel Emmys 2013

Zooey Deschanel balances her particular beauty perfectly in a J. Mendel dress that's a girlish shade of blue, but the style is all grown up.

Julianne Hough Emmys 2013

Julianne Hough's Jenny Packham dress was an entry in the wearing-my-panties gown category on the red carpet, but dang it, she pulled it off! (The look, not the gown.)

Maybe Misses

Alfre Woodard: She can do no wrong in my mind, or, well, until mauve lace. Enough said.
