The Apocalypse? -- Raining Birds, Dead Fish, and China's Locust War

If you live in Arkansas, 2011 certainly kicked off in an Apocalyptic fashion. On New Year's Eve, over 3,000 red-winged blackbirds - dead as the night - rained down upon the tiny town of Beebe (Pop. 4930). The bizarre event has ornithologists scratching their heads, the media making cinematic references and the locals confessing all sins. And having thousands of dead fish pop up on the same day elsewhere in Arkansas … well, it's certainly not helping.

“Looks like some sort of phenomenon happened.”
--Becky Short, Beebe City Council, quoted in The New York Times

As for the birds, poison has been ruled out as a cause of death and experts are now theorizing that loud noises caused the birds to become disoriented, slam into buildings, hemorrhage and die. Also, blackbirds have notoriously bad night vision so they were handicapped to begin with.

In one news video, a reporter found one blackbird alive. He was walking in circles, not making any sound and couldn't seem to fly. It was very disturbing and quite sad, not to mention creepy. The massive death of any species is rarely a good sign.

And if the Dead Bird Hailstorm weren't enough, New Year's Day in Arkansas also revealed 80,000 to 100,000 dead fish (freshwater drum) along a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River. Though there's about 200 miles between the fish and birds, the timing is downright eerie.

State wildlife officials believe the fish kill is disease-related, as it only affected one species. Other possibilities include changes in water temperature (the area was experience a cold snap) or low oxygen levels. Lab tests are pending.

Can we get Bill Clinton on this somehow?

Other animal-related signs that the End is rather nigh:

Last May, a plague of frogs descended on a motorway in northern Greece causing accidents and blocking the road for hours. Officials claim the frogs had vacated a nearby lake looking for food. Another theory is afoot, however.

In the Bible, y'see, Egypt teemed with frogs after its rulers provoked the divine wrath – the second of the 10 plagues prophesied by Moses. Any mention of financial meltdown in the Bible? If so, then let's keep tabs on Greece, shall we?

Meanwhile, China is waging a very real war with locusts. This past summer, authorities fought massive swarms as they destroyed thousands of acres of grasslands and farmlands. Authorities blame abnormal weather. To their credit, the Chinese are fighting Nature with Nature, sending a ravenous Duck Army to gobble up the little bastards.

And in other Apocalyptic Animal News, I must credit blogger Michael J.W. Stickings, who was properly revolted by a company that sells beer in bottles made of dead animals. You have to see it to believe it. The fact that the company, BrewDog, cheerfully claims to be using roadkill offers no comfort.

No matter what one makes of all this craziness, I know one thing for sure: We're all going to need a bigger umbrella.

And some help.

Candelaria - First of all, with a glorious name like that you should be Queen of Something.

The church I attend has pointed out that praying is the same as worrying. You are focusing on something intensely with your heart and soul. An interesting thought.

The only reason I don't believe this is the End Times is because we are not nearly uncomfortable enough. Maybe it's just getting started .... ?

In the meantime, I pray/worry that all the birds stay in the air, where they belong, and that the bees and bats come back stronger than ever.

You're so right, Jane. We lose bats and we will see a significant rise in insects and other pests. We need them.

Where is Batman when you really need him?

Promise me you'll write a song about it, okay? I've already started on some lyrics last night. It may not help the animals but at least they won't be forgotten.

Bees, bats, fish, birds, oil spills, warming weather, and murders more bizarre than the last...having grown up in a Baptist Church, I hear the sermons about the last days and I do worry. But, as I've heard - If you're gonna pray, why worry and if you're gonna worry, why pray.
I take no comfort if these are the last days (which I sometimes feel strongly they are). I am also trying not to despair because I believe good will triumph.
In the meantime, I'm trying to live the best I can and be an asset in this precious, fragile world of ours.

This past year has also been terrible for bats. Some states have had their entire bat population wiped out from white nose (fungus) disease. I'm afraid of bats, but they are a huge and important part of our eco-system, particularly for keeping insect populations at bay. I sure don't want them to disappear!

Massive animal panics, gatherings and die-offs are sometimes a harbinger of other natural disasters such as pending earthquakes. Hence, people tend to associate these events with apocalyptic predictions throughout the years!

Why are dead birds so stragely poetic? Maybe because they can fly and it just isn't right for large swaths of them to suddenly be cut from flight? I can't get this story out of my mind!

The state of our natural world...the state of our world. It isn't very good is it? Happy New Year.

Seems the same thing just happened about 300 miles south, in Louisiana:

The widespread reduction in bee populations has saddened me ever since I was made aware of it. I once shoo'd bees away, but now I welcome their presence and thank them for being around to bring me more flowers and fruit.

I feel strongly that something is going on with our magnetic fields and the mythic ley lines. Sadly, time will tell.

Thank you for the compliment, the man in black is quite the word smith!

... earthquakes & odd weather in UK... floods in Australia... USA birds & fish... China's locust infestation... Worldwide economic crash... too many bad things happening, it's a horrid thought but no-one else is asking the question: is it the beginning of The End

Tori,

I had no idea about this pattern. Sounds similar to the hive collapse that is happening with bees around the world - both are terrible signs about the state of our natural world and both have the experts stumped.

And you theories about crashing into that 'veil between life and death' ... um, wow. I think you just wrote a Johnny Cash song.

This isn't the first January where thousands of blackbirds have fallen from the skies and died. Similar instances of mass bird death have occured in January 2007 (blackbirds), January 2009 (blackbirds) and January 2010 (sea birds).
This is no longer a coincidence, but a pattern. What is happening as we transition into the new year that is causing birds to die? Some cultures say the veil between life and death can be thin during the transition into a new year. Perhaps they all just crashed into that veil?

It is so eerie!
