The Endless To-Be-Read Pile

(originally posted on My Really, Real Reality)

One of the blogs I follow recently asked the question: "How far along are you in your current read before you start thinking about what you’ll read next?"  As I pondered my answer to that question I realized, I'm thinking about what I'll read, after I read the book I am going to read after the book I will read after the book I am currently reading!

Confused?

Truth is - I never stop thinking about what I am going to read next.  Or after that, or after that!  My TBR (to be read) list is a mile long.  And never seems to get any shorter.

I often find myself thinking about a book I want to read and have to remind myself that I have 2 or 3, or more!, books stacked up on the nightstand or waiting in my Nook which need attention before I can get to the book I was thinking about.  So the TBR pile gets even bigger.

I can spend hours at the library or the book store just wandering the stacks, picking out books I want to read.  Or on the B&N website checking out the latest offerings for my Nook.  Money constraints usually limit my pile from the bookstore or for the Nook from getting out of hand.  But at the library I have to cut myself off at a certain point because I know I'll never get around to reading all the books I want to take home before they have to be returned.  And the TBR list grows longer.

It's a self feeding, never ending, circle of a cycle.  But I can't complain.  I love to read.  I have since I was a little kid.  I actually can say I have a fear of suddenly having nothing to read - and I plan to make sure I never have to realize that nightmare.  By keeping the endless TBR pile fed and growing.

And now I pose the question to you - "How far along are you in your current read before you start thinking about what you’ll read next?"  Am I as strange as I think I am?  Or do others think that far ahead in their reading lists?

So do I have a really long TBR list. I realize myself checking the new bestseller list, and recently released NY times bestseller list, while I already have so many books bought , only to be shelved.

Every now and then, I resign from my work, to read the books all day. But , fortunately (or unfortunately), I haven't dared yet. Did you see the movie "Sabrina", a new version with Julia Olmond and Harrison Ford? In the movie, Sabrina's father loved reading so much that he had become a chauffeur, to secure enough time to read books. Sometimes, I want to become a chauffeur too!

tennismama Hmm... a chauffer. That would work! Where I work , our security person at the front door spends a lot of time reading and I often find myself thinking maybe I should apply for a job in security! LOL

I don't know how I'm just now seeing this post (you're on my google reader and I just came across it here at blogher? how'd that happen?) but thanks for the mention! I'm the same as you... the hours I could spend in bookstores... and the TBR is just never ending. But really, it'd be sad if it did end, yeah? Having a good book to look forward too is pretty awesome.

LOL!! I don't know how that happened. But I'm glad you finally saw it! :) Yes, you are right - I would be absolutely devestated if the TBR pile disappeared!

One of the "casualties" of being a reviewer is that you get lots of books in the mail. These pile up on top of purchased books, borrowed books, and books given as gifts. Thankfully, I love books, but find there's never enough time for the ones I want to finish. I'm starting Lee Woodruff's "Perfectly Imperfect" (recommended by another writer) and I'm in the middle of several new novels, including "Night Circus." I try to read from a variety of genres to keep things interesting.

Sounds like heaven to me! (Oh, to be a reviewer!!)

I probably have 200 books TBR. I save them on my wish list on Amazon and Good reads. Plus I swap books on PBS and I save them on there too. SO yeah, I never stop thinking about it either.

200? I think you have me beat. LOL

I always have a few books waiting to be read, always have one book I'm reading. It's just part of my life, and always has been. http://www.emptyhousefullmind.com/?p=297

Mine also. I am always baffled when I hear someone say "I don't really like to read".

I love seeing stacks of books! I'm not a very fast reader, so my pile grows at an impossible rate. This is my link to my TBR pile...slowly but surely I'm getting through it! Sometimes I often don't ponder what I'll read next until I'm done with my current read, unless it is a newly discovered series...then I might want to fly through it - one after the other. My mood at the beginning of the book may be drastically different at the end, so whatever I might want to read next might not sound so good when the time comes.

alienbody I am not a fast reader either, Melissa. And often, too, I like re-reading certain paragraphs in a chapter when I really like it. Sort-of savoring the moment. LOL!

I' ve re-read favorite paragraphs before also! LOL

I can understand changing what you are going to read next based on how you feel at any given time! I also sometimes change my mind at the last minute.

I have too many TBR lists. There are all the books I want to read. There are the books I have to read. There are the books I want to read but have to read RIGHT NOW because they are due back at the library. There are the books I want to read that aren't even out yet. Sigh. So many books.

beckeyp 43 pts

sassymonkey I know what you mean! Right now the book I am about to start isn't exactly my first choice in my TBR pile, but it's due back before the others so it gets top billing

I have 3 books on my nightstand; I read a different one every night. Same as watching a different program on TV every night. And I, too, will go to B&N and peruse the shelves with books on sale, and I can't help picking up all that call my attention. Hubby and I consider ourselves "book collectors." We also like to shop at used bookstores, great finds there too.

Wonderful post, by the way! :)

Thanks Virginia! :) My husband doesn't understand how I can read more than one book at a time and keep them straight. Maybe it's one of those mysterious women multi-tasking skills? LOL I LOVE used bookstores! And also find some fantastic finds at Goodwill!

beckeyp How funny! My husband doesn't get it either, how I can keep track of all those characters from all my books. But I do. ;)

HA! See.. it must be a female multi-tasking thing! The Man of the House also doesn't understand how I can watch television and crochet at the same time either.

LOL that's impossible to answer because I think I'm always thinking about the books to come (and the books I've finished). Right now I'm almost finished with the new Flavia de Luce and after that I'm going to read The Underside of Joy and then I'm going to go back to last year's BlogHer Book Club and read something I missed or maybe I'll read some YA that I'm pretty sure will be waiting for me at the library. Then after those, I think I'm going to read The Magician's Elephant because it's on the shelf and will need to go back soon. Then will come some of the short stories in The Best Non-Required Reading. Then I hope the new Willig will be here and I can read that next. Or maybe I will read Willig before Elephant, if it's here... because I'm dying to read that.

I could go on.

LOL!! You sound like me Denise!! Thanks for reading - and replying! (and now I have to go look up some of the ones you mentioned!!)

Yes! And new foreign films to be seen which take me forever to find! lol There is a reason I have 4 full bookcases AFTER clearing out quite a few books a few years ago. Love love love reading. But you know, my Babcia raised a good point about this. Kids who grow up with books around them and who see their parents enjoying reading on their own, are more likely to enjoy reading as adults AND do better in school because they will be better readers, and therefore better students, in general :) So hugs for the huge stacks of To-Be-Read Books!

I start one book not even half way through I start another. I can read up to two at a time, before I start confusing characters. And I can't have them be the same genre, then I really start confusing them.
I am a book whore.
