"The Addams Family" Musical: A Ghoulish Hoot

I won’t lie to you, the Broadway musical The Addams Family wasn’t at the top of my list of shows to see.I was a Munsters fan.But after seeing the show last week, with its first rate cast and “let’s not take ourselves too seriously” attitude, I have to say, I had a ghoulishly good time....more

Improvisers Make Great Boyfriends

I started taking improv and sketch comedy classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre back in January 2010.  The first thing I noticed was the abundance of cute, smart, funny guys (I may have learned some comedy while I was there). Eventually, I started dating an improviser and since I am that annoying girl who loves to set up her single friends despite having an unsuccessful matchmaking track record, I am going to tell you from my personal (and very biased) opinion, why I think improvisers make the best boyfriends:...more

New Season of Weeds Has Nancy Fired Up and Rolling in NYC

Oh Nancy Botwin, Nancy Botwin, you didn't take any Parenting classes during your unfortunate incarceration, did you?   Lucky season number seven of Weeds has kicked off with a bang: after only three episodes Nancy's already rejected her very forgiving kids, traded a suitcase full of grenades for Afghanistan marijuana and taken a lover.  So Nancy's far from reformed, operating from new turf in New York City, and the season is looking like it's rolled pretty tight....more

For I Findest Thou Funny

"God writes a lot of comedy", Garrison Keillor wrote, "..the trouble is, He's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny."So true!Whenever I teach an acting class, or seminars, or what have you, the first thing I tell wanna-be actors is that there are two things they need to learn to do well: Shakespeare and Comedy--with the ultimate test being a Shakespearean Comedy. Goooooood luck! That, my friend, is the ultimate test.Nope. Scratch that....more

From Chastity to Chaz

I was born in 1963, which makes me 45 years old (for just a few more months.) This is important because it means that I grew up watching The Sonny & Cher show. I LOVED The Sonny & Cher show. I mean you didn't see women like Cher walking through the Piggly Wiggly and you certainly didn't see women talk to their husbands the way Cher talked to hers. And then there was Chastity. The best shows were the ones where Chastity appeared, usually singing "I Got You Babe" along with her parents. I loved that. ...more
