Three Endangered Species Sculptures are Done

I am doing a series of clay sculptures of critically endangered species, and I have now done three; The Chinese Tiger, The Chinese Giant Salamander, Baby Leatherback Turtles. I have also finished the clay work on the Eastern Lowland Gorilla. They are all headed for extinction without serious intervention. We are in the middle of a mass extinction of plants and animals in the world. To find out how to help, contact The Nature Conservancy.  Also, don't forget my book, Enfolded in Silence/A Story in Art of Healing from Sexual Trauma in childhood....more

Handmade Chat with SCULTUREinDESIGN

When I was a little girl, my mother and I took pottery classes at the famous Detroit landmark, Pewabic Pottery. My mom is very creative and tried to encourage an interest in the arts in both her children. Because I attended pottery classes, I have always appreciated the art of ceramics and know the amount of time it takes to produce a unique piece. Sometimes, you have a piece of clay exactly as you wish it to look and it is ruined in the firing process. Patience and tenacity are essential qualities for a successful sculptor, not just an artistic eye....more

Made a New Sculpture appropriate for Valentine's Day

I did infact get back to my studio and have made a new sculpture out of clay. It depicts a married couple (us) cuddling on the couch and dozing off in each other's arms. It seems appropriate to write about it on Valentine's Day. The sculpture is still wet and drying. Doing sculpture in clay as been a life long love of mine. I had been away from it for a while focusing on my book. It feels great to have my hands in the clay again.      I will be having a book signing and art display in March and will write about that. Stay tuned....more

Getting Back to the Studio

My pipes broke in my studio and are getting repaired finally today. I have ordered my clay and hope to get back to it very soon. Working in clay has been a long time passion for me. It is a cooperation between me and The Spirit. I am working on a piece, and suddenly what I wanted to say is there and I don't know how I did it. It is a reaffirmation of faith every time it happens. I haven't done new sculpture in a little while, so I am trusting that it is all still there. Always hard to start back after being away from it for a while....more  I will email you too, but wanted to say how sorry I am that you have all ...more

The Joy of Sculpting

I love making sculpture out of clay. Yesterday I had a model come to pose for Jesus for "Jesus and the Wild Beasts." Scupting from a live model is such a joy. Jesus is resting from  his fast and his struggles with the Devil. He is lying down on his side with his head resting on the paw of the bear who is resting next to him..The lioness is lying with her back upagainst Jesus back with her eyes closed. There will also be three jackels and two wild dogs. ...more

Jesus and the Wild Beasts

I've been a sculptor for more than forty years (more if you count the clay pieces I did in kindergarden). I have made the permanent nativity set for the Wsashington National Cathedral. Now I am starting a long term project of my favorite scenes from the Gospel according to Mark. It is the earliest gospel and contains some of my favorite stories. The first one I am doing is from the first chapter where Jesus goes out in the wilderness and is with "the wild beasts." I am just beginning. I found out what wild beasts there were in Israel in Jesus time, and am deciding which ones to put in....more Thanks, Robin. It is fulfilling. I am now finished the clay work and am ...more
