Sick Kids and Sucky Language

It's been hard for me to get back to writing because for the past three weeks, I've been dealing with one sick kid after another; and I have four you know! Between Nia and Nadia, I've been keeping our neighborhood pharmacy busy of late. They're actually calling me on a daily basis and asking if I need something....more

Calling Loudly, “J.D. Salinger”

In 1941, J.D. Salinger had seven stories rejected by The New Yorker. Apparently undaunted, he submitted an eighth the same year, "Slight Rebellion off Madison," which was accepted. BUT, it was about a disaffected teenager (can you guess his name?) nervous about the war, and in the wake of Pearl Harbor was deemed unpublishable - so did not see print for another five years....more

Shame on Chuck E. Cheese!-

Has anyone else seen those recent Chuck E. Cheese commercials? They're the ones where the moms are so worried about their kids safety that they become over-protective and can't relax when the kids are out to play. One commercial shows a nervous mom standing at the window looking outside while the kids play on the swingset.  Another shows a mom wrapping her kids up in bubble wrap before they go for a bike ride.Oddly enough, the solution message then enters... take your kids to Chuck E. Cheese where they can have some safe fun....more

Are We Raising a Generation of Nearsighted Nerds?

Amidst all the busy-ness of the holidays, did you catch the news last week? A study conducted by the National Eye Institute was released, showing that nearsightedness has increased in the U.S. population 66% since the 1970’s. Not good news, considering it costs us $3.8 billion a year in vision care.  The lead author of the study, Susan Vitale, said that the likely cause is less outdoor time for kids and more time spent in activities requiring close-up viewing such as text-messaging, playing video games and Web surfing. Interestingly, at almost the same time as this story hit the presses, my younger daughter's 5th grade class finished a week-long tracking of their own electronic media habits....more

Have You Played Your 60 Minutes Today?

The NFL is on to something! They have launched this great new campaign called NFL Play 60 where they are encouraging kids to play each day, every day for at least 60 minutes. The idea is to promote a generally overall healthier lifestyle. I think it's genius and I say, "don't let it stop there!"...more

Pumpkin Spice Latte & Frugalista Chic

Ahh... the holidays are upon us... Images of sugar plums dancing in our heads while dreaming if Santa Claus will be providing us with treats (or a big fat lump of coal) under our Christmas trees. Who am I kidding?! That is what I want.. those images on the books I read to my son at bedtime. ...more

Does "Hit the Bitch" Stop Domestic Violence?

When Nordette Adams, another contributing editor at BlogHer, told me about the Danish anti-violence program, Hit the Bitch, I thought it must be some sort of joke. It wasn't. Nordette had read a post on Feministe, in which the author "hit the bitch" avatar as many as 15 times, watched her cry and cover her bruised face, and then was rated "100% gangsta" when the "bitch" collapsed. As the online abuser observed her status, the words changed. ...more

Turning Water Into Wine

John 2:5- His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."The reception was running out of wine, and Mary knew just what to do, and who could get the job done. She went to Jesus and said, "They have no wine." And he answered her with "Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come." Then she looked at the servants and said, "Whatever He says to you, do it."...more
