New To Yoga? Four Must-Haves to Get Started

Yoga is a very simple activity in the fact that all you need is a couple of things to practice. It can be done at home or in a studio and all the "equipment" can fit in to one bag.

Here is a list of my must-haves for my yoga practice:

  • Manduka Yoga Mat. Because they are more expensive, I waited to purchase one weeks after I started practicing to make sure I was going to stick with it. When I fell in love with yoga, I purchased a Manduka and I love it! I don't regret the purchase one bit. How to clean? I clean my mat with a water and vinegar mix. The vinegar kills bacteria and washes off any weird smells. Not to mention that you are laying all over the mat and don't want to inhale any harmful toxins from cleaners.

  • Yogitoes. I sweat, so these help prevent slipping all over my mat during vinyasas. Silicone nubs line the bottom of the yogitoe to prevent slipping, adhering to the mat. How to clean these? In the washer, light soap and if you dry them- don’t use a dryer sheet (since dryer sheets make cloth soft)

  • Yoga Blocks. I actually use my studios, but these are great tools to bring the ground closer. They help assist with alignment (if needed) during asanas and jump-throughs during Ashtanga (props aren't supposed to be used in Ashtanga -- so don't tell!)

  • As for clothes I look at Lululemon's "We Made too Much" section or Athleta's yoga apparel. I always search for sales to stay in my budget!
