Thiruvadirai Kali
India has more than twenty different regional cuisines, and unless you're Indian you probably know very little about most of them. I'm fascinated with the wide varieties of dishes you find in India, and since today is the day when a new year is born according to the Tamil calendar, learning about Tamil cuisine seems like a good place to start.

Tamil Nadu is located on the eastern side of the southern tip of India and the cuisine of this area is primarily vegetarian, featuring rice, lentils, and legumes. Tamil cuisine also uses many spices, with the word "curry" actually coming from the Tamil word Kari. There might possibly be more food bloggers from India than any other nation, and I found plenty of talented people writing about Tamil cuisine.

First, hat tip to Nandita from Saffron Trail, whose blog is where I found out about the Tamil New Year today. Her blog has a collection of interesting sounding Tamil recipes, featuring ingredients like spinach, lentils, tomatoes, snake gourd, and ivy gourd. Shown in the photo is Nandita's Thiruvadirai Kali, a sweet dish featuring rice and lentils.

Asha from Foodies Hope featured several Tamil dishes in her post about Tamil Cuisine.

At Veggie Cuisine, I found an entire round-up of Tamil recipes. This blog started an event called Spotlighting the Regional Cuisines of India (RCI) for which bloggers feature the cuisine of a different region each month.

Deepz from Letz Cook writes about the Tamil dishes she cooked for last year's New Year's festival. She mentions the Tamil tradition of serving food on a banana leaf in this post.

Finally, there is an entire blog dedicated to indexing Tamil Recipes where you can find a huge assortment of interesting dishes to try. This blog has a great blogroll of Tamil Food Bloggers too.

That is sooooo true! Being a Tamil Indian, I can honestly say I cook a variety of Indian especially Tamil foods with as many different ingredients as possible, but everytime I stumble upon a new blog on Tamil food, I find a recipe that is new to me.

Some websites/blogs that have a very comprehensive array of Indian specially Tamil recipes:

www.sailusfood.com ( http://www.sailusfood.com/ )

www.themahanandi.org ( http://www.themahanandi.org/ )

Always put your best self forward!
