I am watching It's a Wonderful Life and it brings things home for me every time. The last few years have been crazy hard on our family and I am hoping that 2012/2013 will be better.
I am disgusted by the riots that broke out while people rushed to buy Air Jordan's. Why? In one year, in 5 years, in 10 years, will they be proud of themselves that they were there? Will they be able to put that on their headstones that they were one of the few who were able to get the first of these material goods and somehow it made a difference? What is it about that culture that says "this puts me on the map." ? Can someone write a book about it? I just don't understand.
As George Bailey continually confronts life's impediments, I am reminded of my own life. There was a time when I wanted to be a writer. There was a time when I was willing to be in the marketing/advertising business in order move on up. There was a time I went back to school to pursue a dream I had in earth science. All has come crashing down.
When I saw the news about the people who were involved in the Air Jordan debacle, I was sickened. One responder to the post said (and I paraphrase) "Come to Australia, we don't act that here." So for the last 24 hours I have been researching Australia. God! It would be awesome to live somewhere where there isn't that type of baggage. Fools running around for status symbols.
But the more I learned, the more I realized how much I love The States. We have our flaws but I love the positives too much.
What's the main point of this post? I am having a hard time myself... :)
I think it's "You can't always get what you want.... you just might find, you got what you need." The more I look around and realize the unhappiness and misery I realize that predictability is sometimes good. I am glad we are healthy and things aren't worse. I know friends who are going through a divorce, have no family locally (and therefore no one to rely on for support), or losing jobs/home. We are blessed.
I have a wonderful husband, a healthy child, and much to be thankful for. If you are not positive and look forward to the future, what do you have?
