ugh i just gave what was probably the most incoherent, unenthusiastic lecture ever. my head just wasn't in it today and i found myself staring at 85 faces in a lecture hall with their pen in hand or laptop open ready to write down the astute theoretical connections that i wasn't making today.
it's a horrible feeling bombing in front of a classroom! we all have those days i guess, but it never fails to completely throw me of course when those days pop up. i am learning now that i seriously should have been a lot more understanding of some of my undergrad profs and cut them some slack. maybe this is like academic karma or something.
on the upside i can't wait till the next class where i hopefully will not look like a space cadet with a microphone and a podium.

me too . . .
I had one of those days yesterday, as well. It happens to us all, I think, but particularly in the first couple of weeks when we're looking for that rhythm again after a break. In one of my classes, the students who were so eager last week and excited to get reading, were soooo silent yesterday. Since my classes are relatively small and heavily dependent on interaction and discussion, I could feel every tick tock of the clock . . .
Oh well, hopefully better for us both next week!

Does your university have a teaching resources center? I work in one such center, and we have a zillion resources on how to deal with those kinds of days.
