Fallout From Rush Limbaugh's Offensive Comments

At the top of today's list of hot topics is the fallout for talk show host Rush Limbaugh over his idiotic comments made about Georgetown law school student, Sandra Fluke.  As I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, Limbaugh called Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” in response to her testimony on behalf of her fellow female students at Georgetown in support of the recent health care initiative requiring insurance companies to cover oral contraceptives.  Limbaugh’s reasoning was that Fluke wanted Congress to pay for her contraceptive medication so she could have as much sex as she wanted without ramifications.  Thus, according to Limbaugh, if Congress paid for her birth control, they were essentially paying for her to have sex thereby making her a prostitute.

I’ll give you a few minutes to ruminate on that scholarly line of reasoning.

Still ruminating….

OK then.  Are you as angry and disgusted as I am?  Do you need to go to the toilet so you can vomit?  I do.

I’m not going to spend too much more of your - or my – time discussing this.  I am just going to say that I have never in my lifetime seen women so violently politically attacked as they are on this particular issue.  No one is saying all women must take birth control.  They are simply providing the option to those who wish to do so.  Or to those whose health depends on such medication.  In fact, Fluke was not testifying on behalf of women who wanted to prevent unwanted pregnancy.  Instead she testified on behalf of those women she knew who had very specific health-related issues, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, who must take oral contraceptives in order to maintain the health of their reproductive system.  Fortunately, advertisers have pulled support from Limbaugh, causing him to take notice the only way he knows how – through his pocketbook.  It is a sad day when we allow – or even justify – someone to belittle an entire population by lies and inaccuracies just so he can make a buck or two (or million).  I am also incredibly proud of John McCain for his very outspoken condemnation of Limbaugh’s comments as “unacceptable in every way” and “should probably be condemned”.  Shame, shame, shame on Limbaugh (but, really, should we expect anything less from this hypocritical bully?).

I must say, though, that my favorite response to all this debate regarding the coverage of women’s reproductive health care is the one provided by Missouri representative, Stacey Newman, who has proposed an anti-vasectomy bill for consideration by Missouri lawmakers.  Here, here, Rep. Newman!
