Help! Family Bickering is Going To Ruin My Vacation!
By Mouthy Housewives on July 09, 2014
Dear Mouthy Housewives,
I'm soon headed on a vacation with my husband, kids and all his family. We are going to a beautiful place, and I know I won't be able to enjoy it because his family bickers non-stop. It's exhausting. Everyone does it. His parents, his siblings and their spouses. I don't even want to go except the kids and their cousins all have a great time. Ideas on survival?
Can't We All Just Get Along?
Dear Can't We All Just Get Along,
Sounds like there is some serious negative energy going on there. The problem with bickering is that it's sort of catching. One person starts and all of a sudden everyone is doing it. My psychiatrist calls it the Domino Annoyingitis Family Syndrome. Okay, I made that up. I don't have a psychiatrist. I'd rather spend my money on overpriced pedicures.
First of all, go into the vacation with very low expectations. You probably thought I was going to say a positive attitude but no, that's not going to help you at all. You want to think this is going to be the worst vacation ever. Then anything that even resembles fun will be a great relief.
Also, it's important to make sure you have some down time away from the fighting. Maybe your husband's parents can babysit while you get a date night with your spouse. Or have your husband watch the kids while you get a walk during the day. And be sure to bring your phone so you can vent to your bestie. This is your vacation, too. And you deserve to carve out some enjoyable time.
And remember—you don't have to just sit back and listen to all the fighting. You can either speak up and say something like, "Guys! This is a vacation! Let's stop giving everyone a hard time and just have fun." Or you can ask your spouse to speak to his family. They are his relatives, after all.
Whatever happens—definitely plan something nice for when you get back. A reward for getting through the madness. Like a nice overpriced pedicure. Or maybe an appointment with your psychiatrist.
