The Family Dog

Alex and I had been married for a couple of years. We enjoyed our alone together as newly weds, but when Alex's work schedule kept him away the house seemed empty. And then it struck... puppy fever.
The first time I saw her red hair, I knew she was mine. It didn't take long for her to get settled in. We named her Kaiya, "peaceful".
For my first "baby", I got up in the middle of the night to carry her outside to go to the bathroom when we were trying to house train her. I read The Art of Raising a Puppy cover to cover. I would come home from work at lunch every day to let her out of her crate and clean up any messes she made. She made A LOT of messes. And I still remember the first time we heard her howling in her bed when we left the house without her. We even had flash cards to teach her tricks.
Things are different now at our house. She's no longer the baby in the house any more. She's busy licking cookie crumbs off the floor, chasing the cat, and warning us of possible intruders.
Right now, in the midst of the trains, trucks, pacis, and sippy cups, it's hard to give her the attention she deserves. She is patient, kind, and gives us lots of kisses.
I am so thankful for our dog and the joy she brings to our lives. I know that she will teach our boys about loyalty, faithfulness, and unconditional love. Our house would be empty without her.
