What Can We Do to Make Family Reunions More Fun?

This is a family reunion?!

Where is the family?!

My family has been gathering together at the same reunion for 38 years now. The only problem is, the reunion gets smaller and smaller every year.

Anyone that knows me or reads my blog understands that family is very important to me. I love spending time with my family, hearing about days gone by and planning what's next in our life adventures. That's why you know it's bad when even I think the reunion is a drag. I mean, I try to have fun everywhere I go... this is bad.

IMG_0583Around 75% of those in attendance are 65 or older. Our reunion is always held the second Saturday of June and they all prefer air conditioning. We all bring a dish for a pot luck meal, which is getting worse every year!

Then we start the meeting... this is where the real fun starts. No one wants to listen, everyone talks during the meeting, the President yells to try to get everyone's attention and nothing ever really gets accomplished. After the meeting, I try to squeeze in a treasure hunt to have some sort of activity. Depending on how many people show up this goes over very well. I say squeeze in because the current reunion leaders and the older folks don't like the treasure hunt; it puts the auction behind schedule.

Ahhh, the auction. Allow me to explain.

While an auction at a reunion is not a bad idea, it is when everyone is cheap! The auction items are donations from attendees (remember the age of most of our attendees). They are "left over from the yard sale," "I found this in the closet," "no one else wanted this so I thought I would bring it" auction items. If you do bring something nice you might as well give it away. Most items sell for 25 cents to five dollars, even if you paid ten dollars for it on the way there. We are talking about the people that just brought in a half full bottle of perfume from 1980 to donate to the auction. They will not be paying more than a dollar for anything!

Once the auction has finally ended (after practically giving away the items that didn't get bid on the first time around), it's BINGO time! By now there are 10-15 people left who endured the never ending auction just for their love of BINGO.

Once the day is over and clean up is done, we place another "successful" reunion in the memory books.

Does this sound familiar?

What activities do you do at your family reunion to make it interesting and fun? I need any suggestions you can give, let's hear it. This could help a lot of families so share all your ideas.

Let's face it, the aunts and uncles and older are going to be a problem so bypass that with a reunion for your own generation and younger.

Looks like you're not acquainted with Reunions magazine or http://www.reunionsmag.com! Literally thousands of pages of ideas, suggestions, discussions about dilemmas just like yours. Also check planning podcasts and the facebook page to post your questions.

Many families fall into ruts until someone breaks out and does something different enough to be noticed. Work on allies (usually those in your own generation) and develop ideas to share or even volunteer to take responsibility for the reunion to infuse new ideas.

Go online to reunionsmag.com to request a free copy of Reunions magazine!

Thanks for the suggestions!

texasebeth - The generational gap is our biggest problem. You're right, I need to make some back up calls. A survey may really help to get some feedback too. Now, what to blackmail them with to get them to return it. LOL

kaherbert - Getting new ideas past the "officers" is quite a challenge. I could only imagine the response I would get if I suggested starting over. LOL I love the hay ride idea and it is old fashioned enough that I bet they would too! Thanks!

I would start over from scratch.

Have different activities for different age groups.
Hay rides
cook outs
Geocaching hunts
Excursions to different places of interest.
scrapbooking
Recording family history for a family tree on ancestry.com

Many of my family reunions happen around water, but we all have the same rules about open water and kids. If a kid breaks a rule - they can be put out of the water by any family member. If the child whines to the parent about it being unfair - sentences double or triple.

The hard part is getting the younger generations to come.

You might try putting out a survey asking questions and try to figure out why people aren't coming. This helps provide ammunition for making changes. Is it that there isn't anything fun for the little ones to do? Or anyone to do? Is there no connection to the older people? What do they like? Dislike? Ask for suggestions.

Also start talking with your generation and mention wanting to make changes but you need backup. Getting others to agree with you will help "overthrow" the status quo.

Start talking about changes NOW so people have a year to get used to the ideas. Start small of course. Maybe changing the venue? A place where there is A/C and outdoor stuff for kids to do. Or someone's house who has a pool and a Wii?

Instead of potluck, set up a committee to handle the food. Pick something like BBQ that is easy to make by 3-5 people and have the rest of the folks bring plates, cups, ice, etc.

I have tons more ideas and suggestions. Feel free to send me a message or email me. Info is in my profile!
