Fashion, Gender and Ethnicity: Label Consciousness in Modern Asian Culture

I have found that guys from older cultures are often more comfortable being stylish/metro than many American and Canadian men, even those who are children of old world immigrants. Japanese guys, I think, are the most at ease about being metrosexual. In fact, I think Japanese men INVENTED the metrosexual lifestyle!

Anyway, I was on the subway last week and saw an Asian guy with get this, a GUCCI BAG (I'm pretty sure it's this one). Now, I've never really seen men, regardless of race, with a Gucci laptop bag/briefcase before. That is, a Gucci bag of his own. It's funny. I've never seen non-Asian men with bags like this before...there's an Asian guy that I see a lot in my neighbourhood who has a Louis Vuitton manbag/gymbag (rather than a Lululemon that many Torontonians, especially women, regardless of ethnicity (though usually white) have). Is it because so many Asians are brand conscious (i.e. it has to be a brand that many people across the world recognize...Lululemon, for example isn't "well-known" enough to many...even my mom, who has been here for over 30 years, has criticized me for buying from unknowns or up-and-comers)? Statistics collectors seem to recognize this because the two major (east) Asian clusters in the Environics Analytics website are:

Asian Affluence

and

Asian Up-and-Comers

If you are of Asian descent, married and/or dating Asians or have lots of Asian friends, would you agree with this? What is your experience? Did you have mothers who criticized the brands you were interested in?
