During Fashion Week, I quickly learned that a big part of each show is not simply the showcasing of the garments themselves, but also the designer's overall concept for their collection. This encompasses accessories, makeup, and of course, hair.

My previous posts on Fashion Week have touched on a few popular hair looks for fall (free-flowing bohemian tresses, as well as tightly styled chignons), but we'll be spending a little more time delving into that topic today. You see, Frederic Fekkai was one of the (many) exciting guests to visit the American Express Skybox during the week. Frederic is one of the most famous, talented and sought-after hairstylists in the world, and I have been using his products for years. I was positively giddy, therefore, at the opportunity to hear his thoughts on hair, styling and technique.

He first addressed the group of Card members in the Skybox, answering their questions and sharing his philosophies. He said that great style begins with great treatment, and that while he likes how celebrity styles have influenced us, he feels that we should be "inspired" by them, incorporating key aspects to enhance our own features, rather than copying the look exactly. He also mentioned "a lot of texture" and hair just grazing the shoulders as the next big looks. After his session in the Skybox, I was lucky to get a few minutes to speak with him on behalf of BlogHer.

Many of our readers have limited time to put themselves together in the morning, but still want to look polished. What's a quick, easy-to-achieve style that you can recommend to them?

Yes! I think it's important when trying to achieve a quick style, to prepare your hair quite well. If you have coarse and wavy hair, apply a finishing cream that will control the texture of the hair, and also add some texture to it. If you have hair your length [i.e., mine, which is right below the shoulders], you could make a high ponytail and then take the tail and separate it into two sections. Twist it up and secure it together with two bobby pins. It's very fast and beautiful, and very simple. And then you have, you know, many quick changes, like a low ponytail, or bangs, which change features and create dramatic difference right away.

I am a huge fan of your Glossing Cream and Glossing Sheer Shine Mist.  What are your three favorite go-to products and why?

You mentioned the Glossing Cream--it's obviously a fantastic product. I'm also a fan of MORE [All-Day Density Styling Whip]; it's a volumizing mousse, it's absolutely fantastic. I love that. And also, I would say that there's a cream and a leave in conditioner called Hair Plump that is absolutely divine.

Do you have any tips for ways our readers can create "special occasion" hair at home without it looking too plain or too "done"?

I think it's very chic to have just a very long ponytail. Make sure that the tail is healthy and shiny, and that's a huge transformation right away. If you want a more subtle transformation...[here's the part where he tells me my hair is "gorgeous" and then I nearly shrieked, but since it has nothing to do with the interview, I won't talk about it. What's that? Oh. Oops.]...I'd say maybe change the part from the side to the middle and maybe make the bangs a little more strong. Just be able to play with the hair so that you ensure that it fits your silhouette.

In keeping with Frederic's suggestions, another big look I saw at a number of the shows I attended was a thick headband coupled with a low ponytail. It was very refreshing, however, to hear him say that he's not a believer in trends, but rather, in pulling from a "library of styles and ideas" and really making them fit you. Judging from the wide variety of hair fashions that seem to be on the horizon for fall, it seems that we'll all have a great selection of new looks to incorporate into our own personal "library of ideas."

Many thanks to American Express for arranging the opportunity for BlogHer to speak with Frederic Fekkai.  Metalia also blogs at metalia.blogspot.com.

Thanks for these behind-the-scenes tips. I've always thought that if I had to choose between having a fashion stylist or a hair stylist follow me around all day, I'd go with the hair. Wouldn't most women???
