Feeling Stressed? Take a Detox Bath

Recently, life was outpacing me.

In ten days' time, I co-coordinated Mardi Gras parties for first through eighth grades, co-led a parent meeting for a student trip to France and Italy, celebrated my families' trifecta birthdays, attended V's first grade school showcase, and fielded several major student behavior problems.

All amazing things - minus the behavior issues - but the intensity level was higher than my preferred state.

And life was piling up on me.

My car oil hadn't been changed in 9000 miles.

9000 miles!

I was burning out.

I needed a day off ... s.t.a.t.

So on a Monday, I called in sick. For balance. For mental health.

To change the oil.

My husband's company calls these days balance days - they actually allot him two per calendar year. That seems so wise.

I re-centered myself. I went on a four-mile run, roamed the aisles at Target, stared into space for who knows how long, got an hour-long massage (it had been years!) and indeed, changed my oil.

This day was a reminder to me to slow down along the way. To make intentional pit stops. I try to do this - getting up before dawn and pausing at the start of each class at school.

Yet, sometimes stress builds. Sometimes I burn too hot and start to burn out.

My school roomie (a.k.a. the Italian teacher) suggested a detox bath. Boy was she spot on.

I'd like to make this a weekly habit. Do you bathe regularly? Ha. I mean, for de-stressing purposes?

Detox Bath

  • Here's the detox bath she recommended. I used two cups of baking soda and two tablespoons of ginger. I also added in a few shakes of my favorite lavender bath salts. Oh, and a pot of boiling water.
  • Try to stick it out the full 40 minutes. You'll be a noodle, so make no plans other than to the land of nod. I dropped into bed and a read a couple pages in Gone Girl before zonking out.
  • Here are three more detox baths worth exploring.
  • The Ruby Room in Chicago also has a fantastic formula for detoxing.
  • I enjoy sipping on a cup of Bedtime tea during a bath.

How often do you de-stress? Daily, weekly, as you feel your stress rising ... or once you crash?

What are your de-stressing secrets? Please post a comment to share.

P.S. Are you as in love of the song Happy as me? It's an instant mood lifter.

Ciao for now.

I write about stumbling into balancing roots and wings.

My driving force comes from my mom, who always said: "I gave you roots to guide you and wings so you can fly." I've built my life around that motto. My aim is to pass on to my daughters what my family secured in me.

I want us to slow down, grow roots, and build a solid foundation. I also want to strengthen our wings and soar.

It's a balance between holding on and letting go, between planning and being.
