Granita and Brioche

Of course the title of this post is a bit of a teaser, but the truth is that most Americans know very little about real Italian food. I'm learning about what people eat in Italy by reading some of my favorite Italian food blogs, many of them written by ex-pats who've come to love the foods of their adopted land.

One of my favorite blogs is Lucullian Delights, where Ilva (who's Swedish) cooks in her kitchen located in a tiny village in Tuscany. Ilva has introduced me to Italian dishes such as Frittata with White Beans and Sun Dried Tomatoes, Tuscan Bread Salad with Avocado and Chile Pepper, and Red Bell Pepper and Basil Pasta. Every recipe is beautifully photographed, and there are also photos of Tuscan scenery between the recipes.

If you're thinking of a trip to Italy, don't miss the post from Ms. Adventures in Italy about How to Order an Italian Coffee in Italy. There are lots of great recipes on this blog too.

Viaggi and Sapori is written by Orchidea, an Italian living in Sweden. She shares recipes for traditional dishes like Eggplant Rolls, and Eggplants Parmigiana on a blog with a great recipe index and an impressive list of Italian food blogs, if you can read Italian.

A charming blog by an Italian ex-pat in the U.S. is Briciole, described as "an idiosynratic and opinionated dictionary of Italian words related to food." Simona tells about an ingredient used in Italian cuisine, then includes an audio link where she pronounces the word in Italian and uses it in a few phrases.

More charming blogs with great recipes for traditional Italian food include Porcini Chronicles, Rubber Slippers in Italy, The Kitchen Pantry, and Over a Tuscan Stove.

Finally, Nicole of Pinch My Salt, an American living in Sicily, tells us it's not unusual for Sicilians to eat Granita and Brioche for Breakfast. That's Nicole's photo of the breakfast, which I'm guessing many Americans would love.

Blogher Food Editor Kalyn Denny has been to Italy and would love to go back! She loves learning about Italian food and occasionally makes something a little bit Italian like Spicy Cherry Tomato Sauce for Pasta.

Thanks for this terrific list.  It's a shame when people come visit, and then order the Italian version of things they know in the U.S.! I'd say the same goes for wine, too.  Try things you don't know and just ask what they taste like!!

But, I must say, the U.S. has come a long way since Prince Spaghetti and Tuna Helper.

Oh Abi, you're going to love it there! You might also want to check out The Blog That Ate Manhattan. She's traveling there now and posting daily updates. It's such a beautiful country and the food is amazing.

I'm travelling to Italy in Sept (Rome, Venice, and Tuscany) and I've been scouring these blogs for information. I especially loved the Italian coffee lessons. Oh, I can't wait to put all of this info to use!
