First Day of School Photos

First day of school photos are a tradition around here. They were a tradition before we blended our families and became a bigger tradition post blending.

Every year on the first day of school the school age children would line up outside in front of the door and we'd snap away. Because the "big kids" went to school at different times from the little kids, it was rare to get one big group shot and now that I'm looking at the old first day of school photos (these are from 2006), I'm sorry I didn't force everyone to get out there together - just for a minute.

When Michelle became a "homeschooler" there was much angst from the little kids because she didn't have to get up early in the morning and she didn't have to brush her hair or even change her clothes. In fact, she didn't have a "first day of school" because homeschooling happened every day. We did, however, buy Michelle a brand new pair of pajamas every year at back to school time and she was always amused to have her photo taken in her back to school pajamas.

Now, that first day of school thing has changed for us. The little kids are going to school far, far across town and there won't be that early morning (or even late afternoon) photo in front of the door at our new house. And Michelle will be going off to her first "official" day of college next week without a mom standing by to take her photo.

We're adjusting to the changes. Michelle swears she will have someone take her picture on the first day of school. She has described the new dress that she thinks she'll wear. We're thinking about a great place to take a first day of school photo with the little kids that can become our traditional first day of school photo setting for the next eight years.

Mir blogged about the first day of school photos and included a photo that I love. But then, she came back and she blogged a different kind of first day of school photo angst. Hah. Poor Otto.

I actually prefer the less than professional looking first day of school photos. I think they tell the story a bit better than those that are "perfect". Or maybe it's just my family who doesn't have those glorious, perfect, first day of school mornings? Ah well, Scribbled Scraps offers first day of school photo tips.

It signals the end of lazy mornings, of sleeping in, and of not having all that STRUCTURE to our day.

But why do you dislike the first day of school so much?

If Michelle's first day of school for college counts, your last first day certainly does.

    Love it!

So I hope that counts. I have my last first day of school coming up in a couple of weeks. : ) I used Mr. Linky (HAHAHA), but here it is again. ( http://lauriewrites.typepad.com/weblog/2008/08/fir... )

We don't do that. I dislike the first day of school very much and I'd hate to add to the list of things to do.

But I like the idea of an annual photo, taken at the same place, on the same date. I am going to think of a way to do that in my own family. Maybe on a holiday?
